In Virginia, RV rigs and farming rigs that travel less then 150 miles from home are exempt. With my '96, I can pull my 24', 14,000lb (gvwr) trailer anywhere. If I ever get rich enough to trade and go 150 miles from home, I'll have to have the same Class A CDL required in VA to drive a tractor trailer.

Here in Canada (B.C.) if your trailers gvw is over 10,000 it might be anything over 12,000lbs you need a endorsement on your license it doesn't matter if the trailer is a RV or equipment. The Police/DOT give you a warning for the first offence the second and greater offences = big fines.
The reason for this law is people are exceeding the braking capacity of the light trucks. Overloading you GCWR pulling a heavy trailer is more dangerous than overloading you GVW carrying a load in the box.
The other thing about the manufacturers gross weight going up on the F-350s is now its in the commercial truck range. Any gvw over 12,000lbs here in B.C. Canada is classed as a light medium duty so legally you have to go over scales and stop at brake checks.
Any GVW over 12,000lbs means the DOT can really put the screws to you the one good thing is you don't need a CDL to drive a straight 2 axle truck with any size gvw. Thank god we don't have that dumb rule you guys have in the States where you need a CDL to operate a truck over 26,000lbs that has to be the dumbest rule going.
