Pan shape

You can tell by the shape of the pan on the bottom. The C4 has a square pan. The C6 has a mostly square pan with a notch on one side.

All,
Correct if I'm wrong but:
The small block C-6 had ribs on top of the tranny at the bell housing and the C-4 does not.
The C4 is shorter and uses a two-piece drive shaft and the C6 uses a one piece driveshaft? Is that right. Just an observation.
Again the C4 pan is square and the C6 is not.
I like each tranny for differnet reasons.
Regards,
KingFisher

Also the C-4 is more "serviceable" as the bellhousing comes off it when you drag it up on the bench for work. I can work on either the C-6 or C-4 but the latter is easiest. Natch', the C-6 is the stronger of the two...

All,
I was making reference to the longbed version for the driveshaft comment.
I have never owned a shortbed and over looked that option.

The Ford Transmission Spotters Guide is a good tech article with differences between all the Ford trannys. Makes ID very simple.

Correction

To ford390gashog :

There is a smallblock C-6 option. Usually put behind the 351 Windsor or 4x4 applications. I am using a small block c-6 in my 78 4x4.
