51 F1 - 302/FMX conversion

I'm planning ol' squeaks eng/trans swap. I've seen eng/trans cross members for the SBF/FMX conversion. However, it appears that I'll have to remove the stock flathead/ 3 spd cross member to do this. As the stock master cylinder is bolted to the cross member, what has anyone on this list done to hang the master cylinder when making this conversion? Thanks

The stock cross member has to be cut in just about any trans swap. I recently talked with a guy who did a T-5 swap and he simply hacked the stock 'member off inside of the brake assembly. I asked if the resulting cantilevered piece with the master cylinder, etc was strong enough and he said it was plenty stiff, no bracing required. He made a completely separate, new crossmember to support the new trans. Personally, I think I'd feel better with a brace back to the side rail, but he swears it is OK as-is and I have seen lots of other do similar.

I had to cut mine out of my 48 F-3 to make room for an automatic tranny. I used an 87 Chrysler power brake master cylinder, booster, and hanging pedal from the same car. Look under technical articles for John Niolon's piece on installing the Chrysler brake pedal assembly. It is a great help and it works fine in the 48-52 trucks also...

i just changed mine to a 302 standard shift and i left the old crossmember in my 55 ford. it seems to be okay with it in. still have to put my exhaust on but i think i wont have any problem with it. i dont know about an automatic tranny if it will be a problem. i also have the original 239 with three speed tranny if anyone wants it. make me an offer. i live in florida.

skinhead.........Do you have any pictures you could send? I am looking for a 239 in running condition. 8BA or 8RT heads? An older restoration would be great? I need complete engine and flywheel,no tranny. email me at speedweeks@yahoo.com
