88 ranger, horrible, horrible noise
This is not a constant problem, and that is what scares me.
I recently purchased a 88 ford ranger 2.0, 2wd, on the cheap.
I drove it from Minneapolis to St. Paul, and the first half of the way there was this horrible squeaky/rattling grinding noise coming from somewhere around the engine, it is hard to isolate.
The noise stopped and it was fine for the rest of the way. Since then it happens about half the time I start the truck.
Sometimes it happens right away and the engine will slow and stop.
HELP!

another Q, on the passenger side wheelwell there is a small box with alot of wires coming out of it. What is this? Mine is cracked and has black stuff coming out of it.

Hmm i guess the best place to start would be checking your Alternator, PS pump, water pump, and idlers for bad or going bad bearings. best way to tell is when the engine is cool, each pulley check to see if there is any travel perpendicular to the way the belt travels, I.e. front to back movement. If this brings up nill, I'd have the alternator tested for charging ability....If that still doesnt help, I'm afraid you might have a real serious engine problem.

as far as the box is concerned i'm not really sure that might be, it could be a fuse panel, but i'm not sure.
good luck
