Well it sounds like you have a leak of some sort, even a small one will give you that smell.
Sure fire test is if you get the smell when the heater is on or off.
My experience with heater cores, and I am not sure about yours is that there will be a vacuum or electrical solenoid valve, that will open fluid to the core when your heater is on. You don't want hot fluid going through the core in the dead of summer when you have the air running.
Anyways, in the past I have had leaks at the solenoid valve when it opened or closed. Slight leaks because the piston gasket went bad. You also might have a pin-hole leak that is self sealing itself, however could be the warning signs of a major fluid dump into the cab.
You really want to take some time and stick your head under the dash with a light and check things out. I can tell you that heater core issues are generally the worst because they entail ripping the dash out to get to them on most newer vehicles.

I've had bad heater cores leak enough to frost up the inside of the windshield. Also changed heater hoses once and didn't tighten the clamps enough and the coolant drip caused that yucky smell.
