my truck kinda sounds like a diesel but its coming from the exhaust. I dont think a V8 can ever be quiet like a Honda. Cant wait to see how quiet my engine is after I use some amsoil.

Was it the cold start rattle, some of the oil filters drain back, what kind are you using?

Coolcat I Have Thought The Same Thing Several Times Also. But I Have Not Heard A Rattle I Just Notices Sometimes On An Easy Acceleration It Had A
Sorta Diesel Tone To It. Maybe I'm Crazy! Maybe I'm Just Wishing It Was.
I Think I'm Just Crazy.

I was sitting in a fast food drive-thru and looked in my rearview mirror searching for the diesel truck. Then realized it was me. Sometimes it sounds like a mini-diesel, I've noticed it while truck was warm and cold. I hope we don't find out we have a problem.

I'm glad someone else mentioned this - I thought I was being too "sensitive".

With my '05 5.4, I noticed this the first day I got it home - sounded very "deisel-y". I was worried that the clattering might be a serious engine problem. Now that I have around 600mi on it, it seems to have toned down a bit. I guess its normal.

But I know exactly what you're talking about - glad I'm not going crazy!

I bought my 04 screw 4x4 5.4 in July, I noticed the diesel sound right away. Definitely a different sounding motor then my 2002 Silverado Z71 with piston slap I traded for it.
It also had a knocking sound that got worse the hotter the motor got, you could hear it in the cab. Ford was great and put a new motor in the truck at 1,500 miles, I have a slight knock from the cam phaser on the passenger side now but it’s a lot better then before. BUT the diesel sound was still there even on the new engine.

I crawled under the truck and started listening around and couldn’t pin it down, it almost sounds like its coming from the transfer case depending what direction you turn your head. anyway I took a pc of a broom stick ( I know its primitive)and started listening to different spots on the motor and pick the diesel sound up the most right on the cats by the oil pan and transfer case.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I would like to know if this is normal also, ford says my new motor sounds completely normal. So being a skeptic my obsessive side took over and so I started listening to other people’s trucks where ever I could.

So far after hearing about 15-20 different trucks, they all sound about the same as mine, like a mini diesel.
Guess it’s just a Ford motor sound.
But if anyone has a moment check out the cat thing, and tell me what you think.

Im glad I am not the only one noticing this sound. Im taking it in for a tire rotation and oil change and gong to ask the dealer to check that out for me just to get some piece of mind. I currently have 5,600 miles on it. And you can hear it when its cold and warm as well.

Thanks

First of all, what kinda land do you have and where is it at? Every vehicle i have had and put amsoil in, they always sound quieter. 3 4.0 SOHC Xploders, SHO (3.2 DOHC). So, i guess it will do the same here. My diesely sounds from where the Y pipe is in front of the muffler. The cam chain sound on the passenger side of the motor sounds normal for a Overhead cam motor.

I've got the diesel sound on my truck too. It seemed like it was getting better after 500 miles or so, but now it is getting really loud with 7800 miles on the truck. It's loud enough now that I can hear it in the cab with the windows up and the radio off. Haven't had it to the dealer yet. If they can solve anything for me, I'll post here.

i have the same problem the sound is always better right after a oil change it goes silent because you are pouring such a large amount of oil right on the valve train ford says it is normal and it is to a point if it is louder than a 6.0 you got problems or you may just have the very few special edition diesel 5.4

I dont know but the more I read this threads bout vibrating , rattling engines, etc.... I am getting more discourage about buying this f-150. And the sad part is that I tried trading it in last week for a Tundra double cab 05 with 282 horses and 5 speed tranny and they would only offer me 23,000!!! for my 04' f-150 lariat crewcab.. what a hit Fords take. Oh well you learn and live..
