Replacing Water Pump

'91 Ranger 3.0L 160,000 miles A/C 2X4

My water pump started leaking tonight and i need to know what kind of surprizes are waiting for me. It looks like it may be a bugger to get off. Plus this is the factory pump, so it's been on there for 13 years.

I remember doing a water pump on a '81 cutlass and three of the bolts snapped off from being so corroded. Luckily, after pulling the pump off i was able to put vice grips on the broken bolts and remove them slowly.

I don't want to re-live the above episode when doing my ranger. Any advice or comments are welcomed.

My name is hooD and i approve this message!

While I do not have a Ranger, I did replace the water pump on my '91
Aerostar a couple of years ago. At the time, it had about the same mileage.
As I recall, it was not too complicated, just time consuming. Not sure if
yours is quite the same, but mine had the left-hand thread on the water
pump so please be aware. Just take your time and replace it with a quality
unit.

On my '93, I had to loosen the bracket that holds the A/C compressor and power steering pump in order to get clearance to pull the water pump out. I also marked which bolts came out of what holes because some are longer than others.

UPDATE:

Well, i decided to take my ranger to the radiator shop and let them do the water pump. Working 6 days and 10 hours doesn't leave alot of time lately.

I paid for 2 hours labor, got a new pump, 2 gallons of anti-freeze, and 1 year parts and labor warranty.

I'm back on the road again leak free.

Thanks to all for your replies!
