E40D in '76 F250 4X4?

I'm assuming an E40D is an electronically shifted tranny and that it is bolted to the transfercase in a 4X4 application. Is it as strong as a C6? Can I use it in a divorced transfercase situation? What does one have to do to set up the electronic shift in a '76 truck? What are the gear ratios in an E40D?

An E4OD is (in theory) a C6 with electronic overdrive. In reality, it's more prone to failure than the three speed. I imagine you could fabricate something to make a 2wd E4 work with a divorced x-case, but considering the amount of work it would take, and how many C6's there are floating around, why bother. The amount of work you'd have to go through to wire up a PCM that works with your transmission would be out of hand, and the cost of doing so would far outweigh any benefits of having OD as opposed to rebuilding or buying a direct-drive transmission.

Just to seal the decision for you, you would need to make a VSS work in the rear axle or the tranny won't shift right at all. If you have an R&D team of 20, a couple of trannies dynos for testing, and a couple hundred grand, I'd say, yeah, you can do it.

Or... you could swap the entire drivetrain out of an E4OD truck into yours. You would have to swap the motor, computer, complete wiring harness including FI system, high pressure fuel pumps, t-case, rear axle, and dash (for the electronic speedo, used with the VSS).

Good luck!
