If you hollow them out you are going to need a couple rear O2 sensor simulators. It's been done plenty of times.

If you drill out the cats it will work fine, but the check engine light will come on and stay on constantly because the O2 sensors will be reading different than what the computer thinks is safe.

The O2 sensor is a piece shaped similar to a spark plug with a couple of wires running out of it.It is located in the exhaust pipe and should be as easy as unscrewing it, unplugging it, and replacing it with another. It shouldn't get any louder.

An O2 simulator just plugs in between the O2 sensor on the wiring harness plug and play.
