How quickly should a diesel engine start?
When test driving a new 2005 F350 6.0 PowerStroke, I was surprised that engine was somewhat slow to start. By slow, I mean the engine did not fire up after a couple of starter "cycles" (i.e. RRR, RRR, ENGINE START). Rather, I gave it three attempts with approximately 4-5 starter cycles and the engine started after on the fourth attempt.
It was a sunny 75 degree day, mid-afternoon, and the engine should not have been physically cold.
After a 15 minute test drive I again repeated this exercise of starting the engine with only a minor improvement in starting trials. Other diesels I tried out did not have this lag and started promptly.
The truck is exactly what I want (and the engine ran unbelievably well down the road), but I'm very nervous that this is an indication of a future problem.
Is this normal, might it be corrected easily, or should I abandon this truck?
Thanks
