04 - Navigation system clock problem

I just bought a 2004 EB Expedition. Has anyone had a problem with the clock in the Navigation system not setting itself when the ignition is turned on? If I go to the system setup menu where you can set the clock, it says to wait a minute while it gets the time from the satelites. About 50% of the time after the engine is started, the time being displayed is: --:--

If I set the time manually, the time stays where I left it. No change.

I also found the mapping CD's do not have detailed mapping for small cities and towns. Ouch!

The dealer I bought the Expedtion from is clueless. What else is new after you sign the paper work and drive off the lot.

Someone may need to correct me on this but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the data that comes with the system from the factory does not contain the details. I bought my 03 used so I can not say for sure. I can however tell you that if you purchase the updates from www.navteq.com you should gain the details. Also you should get updated software which may resolve the clock issue.

Consideing that I just purchased the Expedition less than 3 weeks ago, I plan to take it to the service shop as many times as it takes for Ford to fix the clock problem, replace the navigation system or provide updated mapping software. What ever it takes. I'll make them them sick of seeing me driving up to the srevice shop. One thing I will not do is purchase the updates from www.navteq.com with a 3 week old vehicle. The 9 mapping CD's that came with the Expedition are the 2004 version.

One other thing I was just thinking of. In June I ordered new 2004 cd's from Navteq because my EB came with 02 (I think could have been 03, I don't remember now) data. I was told they were on back order. After a month had passed I called back to find out more, ended up talking to someone at Visteon and was told that the 2004 software had some bugs that needed to be worked out and they were not shipping any more 2004 cd's until the bugs were fixed. My new cd's just came in around the end of August. I know that they did release the first run of the 2004 cd's with the bugs and I'm wondering if maybe the software/cd's that you have are from the pre bug fix release? Just something else you may want to explore.

My 04 Exdepition was built in January and just bought it now. Maybe the 2004 package of 9 Mapping CD's are from the first run with bugs as you said. If my clock will not set itself due to a software bug, I'll push Ford in to updating the Mapping software. I'm not about to eat the cost of buying the update from Nav Tech. If Microsoft and other computer software companies can provide software updates, so can Ford. Changing a spark plug will not fix this problem.

Nav Problem & clock

Hi, I have the same problem with the maps. When I was reading the map it had me driving in the grass while going around the off ramp. It also had me on the other side of the road. The GPS time is 12 hours off the short cut is off or the wrong road. I went to the dealer and the parts dept. called the maker of the car raido. The tech said they swhould replaced the GPS ant over the glove box in the dash. When I ask about the maps they said I have the current ver. If I knew I was going to have that problem I would have bought an after market raido.

Cool

I took my 04 Expedition to the service shop. Their part time radio guy said the GPS antenna is bad. The shop ordered a replacement antenna. I'm still waiting for the antenna to come in. I also told the shop that they better have plan "B" sitting on the shelf if plan "A" does not fix the problem. I also noticed the letters for North, South, East and West are the signal strength by color. Red is bad, Green is weak and White it good. My letters were Red most of the time.

When I called Nav Tech about the CD's, I found that CD # 8 and # 9 are mislabeled. North and South Carolina are on CD # 8, not CD #9. What other errors are on these CD's? I told the shop that I want a corrected replacement set of CD's or a document stating the errors and corrections on my current set of CD's untill such time Ford replaces the CD's with a corrected set. I will not purchase a replacement set of CD's. Why doesn't Ford Corporate go back to Nav Tech and have corrected CD's made and distributed to all Navigation System owners?

I have made several attempts to talk to some one technical at Ford Corporate about the navigation system. All I found was Customer No Service! I am very dissatisfied with the 14 pages in the Owners Manual dedicated to the Ford Navigation System. My Garmin 2620 portable navigation system has an owners manual with just under 90 pages.

If anyone finds a contact at Ford Corporate, please pass along that persons name and how to contact him.

Navigation system update. I waited 2 and a half weeks for the GPS antenna to come in. After I brought my 04 EB back to the service shop, I got a phone call from the shop telling me they ordered the wrong GPS antenna and will have the correct GPS antenna shipped in overnight. The next day they called me again to tell me the new GPS antenna did not fix the problem and they will have a new Navigation/Radio shipped in the next day. Today I picked up my 04 EB from the shop and the clock and navigation system is working perfectly. The signal strength is now showing White letters, not Red letters. The clock will set itself in about 5 to 15 seconds after starting the engine.

I looks like Ford will not do anything about the mis-labeled Mapping CD's that came with the 04 EB. It seems very strange for Ford to contract Nav Tech to create the Mapping CD's and not provide Ford customes with a corrected replacement set of mapping CD's. Maybe us Expedition owners should swamp Nav Tech with phone calls regarding the mis-labeled Mapping CD's.
