Washer/Dryer purchase
I have been looking at new washers and dryers, and wanted your opinion. I have it narrowed down between Whirlpool and Maytag. Which brand would you choose/currently own? I know more people with Whirlpool's than I do Maytag's, but I must say all the people I know with a Whirlpool have had it for many years and do a lot of laundry, and they seem to be very durable and hold up fine. I hate making desicions so thought I would see what you would recommend.

There are so many models of each brand I don't know how you could compare. FWIW, we replaced a a 12 year old Whirlpool, mid range priced model, with another Whirlpool we were told was nearly a duplicate of the old one. While newer one has a few extra bells and whistles, it is also FAR noiser than the old one, especially when filling. If yours is somewhere out of the way, noise may not be an issue but ours is located upstairs and we can hear it running all over the house. The old one, by the way, is still chugging away out in my garage, now doing greasy rags and horse blankets. Over 12 years, I replaced the pump (easy, snap fit) and the "dog-ear" cogs in the upper agitator (cheap, easy, drop in).

I have a Maytag Atlantis and grew up with them. They are expensive, but well worth it. Mine is five years old and has done seven loads per week since ownership I just figured out that to date it has cost me $0.28 a load. I have had no problems in the five years and would not go back to anything else.
Theologian is correct that if you use fabric softener the middle gets gunked-up, but mine top pulls off and you can clean out the middle.

I recently stepped up from a basic washer to the Kenmore 90 series and have been very happy with the increased quality and performance. Wash cycle is 16 minutes instead of 12 so my clothes actually get clean. It's a lot quieter than the old one as well. Got it at the Sears outlet (scratch-n-dent).

I sell appliances for sears....and i'd have to say i hear about more problems with maytag and ge than anything else. Plus, maytags really expensive for what ya get. I'd say a whirlpool built washer is the way to go, and yes..kenmore washers are almost all built by whirlpool. Dennis made a great choice with the front load, but the kenmore elite top load machines are really good too.

My brother was getting a new washer and dryer so we took his "old" dryer (5 years old and did not match the new decor of his refinished laundry room). I had a buddy run an extra 220 outlet and now we have one washer and two dryer's. The "laundromat" works great. Ever notice when doing many loads of laundry how you have to wait for the dryer? Two dryers will allow you to do the same amount of laundry in half the time because a dryer is always ready. Worth every penny when you have kids!
