Gas tank swap suggestions

Gas tank swap suggestions
My plan for the Christmas holidays is to customize my '58 F-100 in the so-called "American Graffitti" style, giving a sort of period-correct custom look.
I want to remove the in-cab gas tank and either unstall one under the bed at the rear of the truck, or install a Moon Equipment tank in the bed.
What do you think?
I doubt I'll ever use the truck as a truck, so having the tank in the bed doesn't really bother me.
But if I go with an under-bed tank, will I HAVE TO get a custom tank built? Or can someone suggest a new tank I can purchase (from another car) that can be bolted in with ease?
Thanks!
TC

65-68 Mustang tanks fit right between the rails with only minor fabrication for framing and such. Lots of articles including on this website. Search for classic truck mustang tank. Workes like a champ on mine. Only real decision to make is where the fill will go. In the bed is easiest and is a good show style. I have a hauler, so we brought it out through the left rear fender. Took more fab and body work, but I cna fill 'er up with a load in the bed.

I used the '69 Mustang tank in my 56. Look at John Niolon's tech article on the install.
Not difficult but you have to consider where the fill tube lands. I opted to move mine so that it came up in the wood instead of the metal strips in the bed. Also used a 1" tube frame to hold it in place and it's easy to remove if needed. Bought if from American Pony (I think thats the correct name, a vendor of Mustang aftermarket parts) for $120 plus shipping. Some have used the Ch**y van tank and routed to a fender fill door location. 56FUN

I did use the Mustang sending unit but found a problem when trying to connect to my new Autometer gauge, the ohm settings were different so I got false readings. I ended up sending the gauge back to Autometer and they recalibrated the gauge. Not real accurate readings but I can live with it. 56FUN

Hey 56Fun,
Thanks for the John Niolon article. PERFECT. That's exactly what I wanted to read.
My only question is, are the frame rails spaced the same in 57-60 f-series as in the earlier years?
I'd go measure if I were at home, but I'm "working" now. That's probably evident from how many posts-per-hour I have.
