buying a Bronco II

I'm looking at a 1989 Bronco II XL. It is a 2.9, five speed, with ~140k on it. Priced at $3000 CDN.

Body is in decent shape - were some rust spots that have been touched up. Engine runs very smoothly. Didn't like the handling, but am willing to pay that price for off-roadability.

After I drove it, I tried to put it into reverse to park it, and couldn't get it in. Salesman came out to help me, and we discovered it was stuck in third gear, even though the shifter moved all over the place. Not sure what is wrong, but he is getting that fixed.

Anyways, what are some things I should look out for? How long can I expect the engine to last? I plan on being very particular about the maintenance, if that helps any.
