I haven't read through this entire thread, but I was wondering... I heard that some of the earlier Y-Blocks were painted gold with black valve covers. I just wanted to know if this was true or false. I know that red with black valve covers, and yellow with white()/silver valve covers seem to be predominant in terms of color schemes, but gold with black???

Hmm... I found a couple of pics of Y-Blocks, but something tells me that those weren't the colors those engines left the factory with...

Probably not. I like Ford Green too. I think it only came out on 256 Merc in 54 and or 55. I posted the pic above in fun. I had a little Gold in the can to finish off and wanted to see how the gold and red would turn out.

I have an original 1957 F500-F600 brochure. I would be happy to post it if anyone can tell me how? Or email it to anyone that needs it.

We are restoring a 1957 F600 with a V8 292 but would like to know the colors for a V8 272 and V8 292. I can't figure out on exactly which color, red or yellow, it's supposed to be.

I know this is an old post, but do you happen to know what color silver you had these valve covers powdercoated? Ideally I'd love an RAL number but any lead is useful!

Thanks,

Steve

I honestly do not know, But I was thinking about getting a set up hubcaps powder coated the same silver so I could try and figure it out when I do that?

I think it is simply argent silver.

Blaine, let me know how your hubcaps turn out. I like to keep my truck stock looking so I painted mine silver with a rattle can and then painted the FORD letters red, like they were originally.

I've now reread this post again. Tons of great info, yet so much confusion still. It doesn't really seem that there was a set standard color for a couple years. All I do know is my intake it silver, my valve coves are orangy/red, heads are silver, my air bath is black. I'm going to repaint all them the same colour. As for the block of my 1959 F100 272. I'm still undecided. Unsure what would look correct??

so very true and almost the exact words from my father. However, I still want it to look correct. I did find almost a cream color on the generator bracket?

Mine being a 56, I still intend on going yellow after I get her up and running...only because 1) that's the color that comes to my mind when I hear the mention of any Y-block and 2) eventually I intend on convincing the boss (aka wife) to let me get a crate of some sort to go in, but have every intention of that being Ford blue =)...super informative/contradicting/interesting thread, thanks for all of the knowledge and pictures everyone!

Personally, I don't care for the yellow paint because it shows dirt and grease so bad. A nice alternative would be the Ford red that 50's Ford cars had on their Y-blocks. They sell it at most auto parts stores. This sounds so familiar...... I hope I am not repeating myself. What were we talking about again?? Jag

For the record, I'm in the process of removing my oil pan and underneath the dirt/grease on the lower side of the block I see original yellow....it's a 56 272....
