Hey, email me some pics of your 9200mi engine. I want to use that for documentation. The early '58s were similar to the '57s. Then. in mid-'58 it seems the colors were changed to red block w/black valve covers, which was carried thru to '59. Then, in 1960, the engines were black w/red valve covers and either black or red air cleaners. This was carried through I believe until '64, when the Y-block was discontinued.

This information is only concerning the truck Ys, not the cars, as it seems a lot of times, they differed quite a bit from the trucks.

Hehehee, seems we are all going or getting dizzy with colors, i think maybe all of us are right maybe. Let's stop a minute, because i keep telling many members in here the color schemes, i remember from long long ago, i'm said in my family to have a memory like no one else and all my family, in my case all four sides come to me, if they want to know a detail about a certain visit or something from the year 1960.

I'm starting to think it makes a difference, as far as whether you live in the North or the South as i do live in the south, and i remember like on your ford trucks all those color schemes, and the cars, all the way back to the flathead!!! I think everybody in here is being honest, i just belive it's as i said above, because down here in Houston Texas, i'm telling everyone, Ford never put out a YELLOW block on no engine, but maybe up North or around Canada they did??? , and i'm speaking of Ford. I also remember people from up North always disagreed (Not argued, but said no ours is this way) way back in the sixties.....Janet

The original motor for my 55 sunliner was more of a orange then red, everyone paints theirs red but mine was orange and my dad bought the car new so I know it was not repainted. I looked at a 57 F400? to possibly buy the motor from and it was yellow like the 55 mercs, thats all I know about the original colors. Jeff

I know we are talking trucks, but I have a '60 edsel and the valve covers and air cleaner that match the paint job... and they are that '60s lightblue/tourquis color. My 57 ranchero 312 has a yellow block with red valve covers, and I've seen the neighbors '59 292 mercury that has a silver block, red air cleaner, and silver intake and valve covers. All are untouched.
I saw a t'bird with a gold block , gold valve covers and gold air claener, but it was for some reletive of Elvis. It ws gold with gold sparkly interior. It was in the rock and roll hall of fame. I doubt that one was stock ford.

Ford did indeed have yellow y-block engines in 56 heavy duty & COE trucks. I seemed to have remembered them as a kid but to find out for sure I asked a reliable source: my dad. He worked in truck engineering at Ford in Dearborn back then and said "yes, they were yellow"

I think a majority can agree that Yblocks for trucks (and some cars) did in fact come yellow. I can swear to a '55 Merc that had a yellow engine, as it was in our restoration shop in January, and was unrestored. It just needed a freshening up before going to auction at Barrett-Jackson.

There are also a few anomalies that came yellow as different displacements (for example the yellow 256), and also that others have painted there blocks yellow for the kool factor. What I'm going for is the corporate decision that called for one color or another each year that factories should have adheared to, but often times didn't due to shortages or leftovers from other years (1958 being a case in point).

I think we've beat this yellow thing to a pulp, let's move on to the other years that are unaccounted for.

No Yblock Bill, for some reason the pictures are not loading that you're sending me, why don't we try this, just send me an email from this site and say it is you, from there i will just give you my yahoo email addy, as they won't let us poast them in here (email addresses)

I can help y'all clear this color thing up. Here's where people get things mixed up on the 239 from 1954, okay the 1954 f100 with a 239 was red bolck and intake, and had silver valve covers (argent). Now on the big 54 pickup f650, those had a yellow block, and so did 55. Also take note in 1954 on the f100's they came with an option of the powermaster Yblock which was a 317 lincoln yblock and that one was yellow with silver valve covers.

One more time just to help out, i already researched all this

1954 f100 239 was RED with SILVER vavle covers

1954 f100 with the lincoln 317 an option that year, which was called the powermaster was yellow

1954 f650 with yblock was yellow with silver vavle covers.

What i'm saying is this, people i don't think sometimes realize how long ago 1954 has been
You can take my word on this. But folks you need to remember even 1960 was one heck of a long long long long long time ago, and these engines could have been repainted. When you're talking about paint on an engine that gets hot and cold thousands of times, plus is half a century old, what you think might be original is not original. I remember even as far back as 1969 seeing a 1954 for pickup and most even that long ago had no engine paint left on them, even then.........Janet

EDIT, what user Yalincoln2 stated above is also a fact, such as the buses or f600's were the ones that were yellow then, but 54 239 f100 all red folks and silver valve covers, also by mid 57 all Yblocks were orangish red with black valve covers up to 59, and 60 to 63 yblock in pickups were and also the cars to 1962 all RED...Now the 292 yblock in the 1964 ford pickup, (last one made) had a black block and black intake manifold

I am thinking that the yellow y blocks were used in the f250 and up and the red ones were used in the f100s. What do you all think?
