Intermittent "clicking" under truck

2004 Lariat Screw... About to take it in to dealership and wondering if anyone else has had this annoyance. At low speeds, there is something that will pop or click, intemittingly. I would not describe it as a "clunk". It happens on straight smooth surfaces, so it doesn't appear to have anything to do with bumps, turns, or torque. It will be just one click then do it again after some time. It's loud enough to hear with windows up. Seems to be coming from underneath somewhere. If it is happening at higher speeds, I can't hear it. Hate to assume it's nothing to be concerned with. Even if it is, it's very annoying. Any thoughts?

Kbheston, you know I have encountered the same noise you are talking about but i just figured its a rock or something the tires could have picked up and spit under the truck. Let me know what the dealership tells you. thanks Mario

Sounds like you A/C compressor turning on and off. It can make a sound like that.

That sounds like exactly what it is.

I've heard that sound with my Lariat. It's on the passenger side and it sounds like the front tire is throwing a stone, but it's not... No body's AC compressor should sound like that.

Turn the AC off and see if it still happens. I've only heard it like 3-4 times in 2500 miles. My 1984 F250 used to do it also and it sounded like a rifle shot. It was nasty sounding and lots louder than an AC compressor clicking on...

My guess is it's just the steel settling together, but that doesn't explain my F250 doing it when she had 180k on it...

NOBODY should be able to hear their AC compressor clicking on and off inside their truck while they are traveling with the windows closed.. Especially as quite as these 150's are inside....

I've read all kinds of BS fead to people on this page from dealers about their AC units. My dealer told me they went with a smaller compressor(fuel mileage) so they are not as cold....Bullcookies....

Even with the A/C off, it will still click on and off.

It's supposed to do that so the bearings don't get seized over time.

All my vehicles had this sound, some louder than others.

I've gotten that sound about three times, all have occurred as I have been entering the freeway from the on ramp near my house. I assumed it was a rock being thrown as well. Mine comes from the front driver's side.

Thanks all. The clicking I was hearing is indeed the AC compressor turning on & off. Drove with it off and heard nothing. To check a bit further, I pulled in to a carwash bay to enhance the sound, turned on the AC, and "click" off "click". Nice to believe it's not a problem, but disappointed in having a noisy relay. It is quite annoying to me.

My compressor cycles nearly every 20 seconds and I can hear it in the cab. I just deal with it.
