B4000 Code Help..

Hi Everyone!

Great site you have here.. Very helpful! I've used the search and done some research before I posted this, but still have some questions.. My boss has the above pickup and I'm trying to get it running better for him. If you really mat the gas with the truck in idle, there is a definate pause and then the engine accelerates. While the pause is happening, the interior lights inside actually dim for a second. Check Engine light is on constant by the way. I pulled the codes and got a 214 (which I've seen is CID Cylinder Identification Failure) which according to some posts means the Camshaft Position Sensor is gone. I also had some EGR codes (335 was one) but I've since replaced a lot of the EGR components and they are now history. I think I can beleive the problems with the truck (surging at constant speed also) are caused by this sensor. HOWEVER, I have went to 4 different parts stores for prices. The Mazda dealer wants $450 for the sensor (they have 3 different ones listed for the 94 B4000 (4.0) from $450-$162 so I have to verify which one it has). The Ford dealer wanted $520. Aftermarket? Forget it. Carquest wants $800 mechanic cost and NAPA? $1300!!! The guy almost fell down behind the counter as he told me.. Mechanic cost $1000! Just for a camshaft position sensor!

So, what I am hoping for is some advice. Is this code DEFINATELY this sensor? I cannot for the life of me find where this sensor is located. I have the Haynes repair manual for it and it shows a picture for the 3.0 litre, but cannot see it in the same location on the 4.0. Does anyone have an exact description on where to look? I know what the sensor itself looks like thanks to the Haynes book, but can't see on the engine where the sucker is located! I thought about grabbing one from a wrecker (if someone here can help me find where it is first! LOL) for now to see if the code goes away. Not big on the whole Junkyard sensor deal but it's better than spending big money on a new sensor if it's not the problem.

Any suggestions or tips on getting rid of this engine code would be GREATLY appreciated! I would be deeply indebted!

Thank you.
Craig

The CMPS on my 3.0 was in the back near the firewall just behind cylinder #1. It was very difficult to find so I opted to take it to the dealer and they replaced it for $274. So I would have a hard time shelling out $1000 for the work. I also have a '94 4.0 in my Aerostar, if time permits I will go out and see if I can locate the CMPS to give a better description as to its location, however it may be different on the truck from the van. Not sure.
I do know however, once you locate the sensor and you remove the wire harnees and pull the top off of it you will see a metal tab like thing, if that is broken (and probably is) you will have to replace the whole sensor. As was the case with mine.

Thanks for the reply and the offer to take a peek on your Van to see if it's the same by chance. Did you experience the same problem when your sensor was bad? The engine really hesitates for a second when you shove the gas and it surges noticibly at crusing speed.. In reverse, the surging seems more noticable.

I think on the '94 4.0L the camshaft postion sensor and the synchronizer shaft are one integrtal unit. That's probably why the part is so expensive.

I wonder how come that link you provided didn't come up when I did my search before.. Hmm.. Odd..

It sure would make sense with the prices I've gotten that it be the all in one unit.. Odd how Mazda has 3 different "Camshaft Sensors" listed for the 4.0 for 94 with 3 different prices. One is $420, the other is $181 and the last is $161... He told me to check the part # on the unit to see which one I have.. Haven't been able to find the sensor to get any part # off it yet..

At one point I gave up and started calling the Ford dealer and told them I had a 94 Ranger to get the parts I needed as the Mazda parts dealer couldn't even find the camshaft sensor in their parts screen. I had to show him where it would approximately be and what it looked like as they have no diagram showing it. Only 3 part #s. At one point they told me the 2300 was the only one produced with a camshaft sensor.

Forgot to add, the camshaft position assembly on the 4.0L is located on the top center of the engine, back toward the fire wall, hidden pretty good by the upper intake.

If you go to page 6 of this PDF file you will see a picture of the 4.0L with the upper and lower intakes removed. In the pic, the camshaft postion sensor/synchronizer assembly has "RTV" written over it (upper portion of pic).
