That BS makes me very angry
It is forbidden by the law to change the odometer here in Germany. Talk on Sunday with my lawyer.

mike,
good afternoon, you can change it here but, the odometer has to be adjusted to the last known mileage. and the dealer is the only one that i know of can do that. but the laws may vary from state to state. but the mileage has to be recorded. either by the dealer or by the dmv. and if you bought the vehicle " as is" your kind of stuck with it.
don't get me wrong i'm no lawyer. and don't claim to be. i understand your anger.

Hey Michael - just for your information, the only way to do "that" on an 03 Explorer (that I am aware of) is to change the Instrument Cluster (and I am guessing it occurred at 31,000 miles), something that typically wouldn't be done to gain value on a vehicle (as it is an expensive item to change).

If it is done (and it should only be able to be performed by a Ford Dealer) there should be a sticker on either the drivers door, or the side of the Instrument Panel, and also in the Owners Manual, stating the previous mileage that the vehicle had covered.

The Explorer does not have the ability to "edit" an Instrument Cluster to prevent people editing it for this reason, the unfortunate part is when a cluster is changed...

Hope that helps somewhat - sorry to hear about your situation!
Did the OASIS show a Instrument Cluster change?

adrian,
thats what i was trying to tell him! basically. that was the first question i asked mike if that had happened. he doesn't know! that i know of! hey some car dealers aren't that honest. i have seen and done it! take 2 cars and make 1 its not uncommon! and you can have odometer re-edited but it has to be reflashed and the mileage updated. into the ecm.
otherwise nothing will work right. engine or tranny stays in limp home mode.

Mike - it may not have been recorded on the OASIS if it was done.
The OASIS is there just for warranty work - so if the work was performed out of warranty, then it won't have recorded it.

Best of luck resolving your problem though!

I'd run a pint of diesel in pure oil (no detergeants) for long enough to warm it, then replace that and trash the filter. That will hopefully flush as much goop out as you can at one go - since you cant know what has gone before.

DON'T use ether as a starting agent - it doesn't do favors to any diesel engine.

Likewise, what helps as an additive in a PETROL tank won't work in a diesel and may cause huge amounts of damage!

Petrol is fired by a spark, diesel by heat and compression. The amount of compression is enough to cause petrol additives to pre-ignite when the piston is only a third the way up on a compression stroke...

Petrol engines run about 110 to 150 pounds per square inch. Diesel is easily twice that pressure, and they have no throttle flap. Be extraordinarily cautious what you burn as fuel... many a diesel engine has been wrecked by putting the wrong thing in it's tank or down its intake.
