Best Rust & Salt Protection

Looking for experience on Rust And Road Salt protection. Vehicle type in Signature. Additionally what are the key areas suggested.

I live in Madison, Wisconsin. Road Salt is a big issue. Just moved here from California.

I've heard of folks using spray on bed protections.

I lived in Philly for a couple of years, The best thing I found was to make sure you wash your vehical on a regular basis. This also help with the salt air.

Good vehicle maintenance is a given. Beyond that, at least around here, it's Ziebart. They'll guarantee it against rust-through for as long as you own it, and they don't exclude road salt like Ford does.

I agree with Jeff. My current truck doesn't have it but I am originally from Michigan and we always used Ziebart for undercoating our vehicles. It is guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle. Intitially it may cost $200 or so for it, but after that it is only like $25 to have it "touched up" every year. Never had any problems at all with it or with any car I ever had it applied to. Works great.

I live about twenty minutes from Madison and the best protection you can
get for your vehicle is to wash it. Find a do it yourself wash and use it. We havent had a bad winter here in 15 years or so as far as a lot of snow (different story up north) I wash my vehicles twice a week more if need and I have no rust problems.

Let's face it-when you're dealing with constant sub-zero temps and everything liquid is frozen, washing a vehicle is not possible, at least not outside. So if you're going to be exposing your truck to salty roads and you want protection, go with a professional undercoating or if think you want to try an alternative for economics, you might want to try the spray-on undercoating with the do-it-yourself cans for at least the rear wheelwells. The front wheelwells have vinyl liners and don't need any. The Ziebart job in this area is $180. They remove the spare tire and get everthing under the bed area.

I had a 2001 SCREW and got the undercoating done by the dealer. It was from Ziebart. My 2004 SCREW has one from Auto Armor, it was also done through the dealer. I can't tell the difference, the have the same warranty. Just don't go to the dealer. Find the Ziebart or Auto Armor shop and go directly to them, you'll save some $ for sure

Ziebart is the only way to go. I had all of my cars and trucks done. Well worth it if you are going to keep your truck. Here in St Louis they use salt, salt and more salt. Undercoat cost me $143.

I agree. It's not that we have had terrible winters here in Maryland (coming from Michigan I don't think it even qualifies as a winter! haha). But they use salt like it's going out of style! So if they do the same where you are go for the professional coating. I'm **** about my truck but as stated it is usually way to cold for me to wash it like I want to in the winter. Go professtional, it's pretty cheap and worth every penny.

I have a Ford 2004 F250, Superduty. I've had it for 6 months w @3,000 miles. Is it too late to take it to ziebart for an undercoating. I've looked underneath and it looks pretty clean.

Most Ziebart shops will rust-proof it for you up to a year after you bought it new, and still give you the new-vehicle warranty.

I just looked at the ziebart web site and called the local shop. I was told that the new vehicle warrenty applies to all vehicles with less than 12,000 miles or one year. You should be fine to get it done!

Thumbs up

I'm going to be hitting this in 2 ways. I too am retentive and wash my rig 2-3 times a week (I have a pass). I will also be making an appointment for Ziebart to spray on some protections.

I should be good to go. Thanks for the replies.
