The easiest would be another FE engine. That could be a 352, 360 or a 390. The 352 puts out much more torqe then the 351 (350ftlbs) and makes a better overall truck engine. Just put an FE in you wont be disappoanited best V8 family Ford ever produced.
I hate to sound stupid; but, I don't know what an FE is! I had a 360 in a '69 years ago, and loved it! Now, people tell me they're guzzlers. Have pity on me, I feel so lost!
I just took a 390 out of my 65 and everything bolted up good. I had no trouble with it and it ran o.k. but thats my opinion. The 352 is also a good choice. Which ever one you decide, hope its the right choice for you.
FE engines an easy identifier is that the rocker cover covers a good part of the intake. you are looking at the 352, 360, 390, 401, 406, 410, 427, 428. the 352-390 are the easiest to find. The 360 and 390 were made into the mid 70's.
I may have missed something here, but what is your original motor and transmission. This will of course determine what the easiest replacement motor will be.... What are your intentions for this truck? Do you want a hot rod or a worker? How close to original appearance do you want to keep it?
I have a 66 F100 with an '84 302 and AOD tranny. Not a hot rod! I went to East Texas and back last weekend drove 70 mph and had the AC going and I got 17.8 mpg. That's pretty good for a daily driver. Good looks and not too bad on the pocketbook.
Thats really good, my wifes 03 fx4 with a 5.4 only got 16.9 with a K and N, before it got around 15.4 stock. Gotta love those K&N's! For my 65 swb I am thinking of using a 351W efi motor, or maybe a 460 hmmmm
back yo the basics---my 66 F100 currently has the 300-6 cyl with 4 spd manual. I'd like to retain the stock trans. Since I'm getting back into this after years away, I'd like to install a V8 which is as close to bolt-in as possible. I intend to use it as a daily driver, and for those summer evening rides with all the windows down. Doubt I'll ever pull more than a ton.
Well.... The 289/302/351w will all require the same amount of work to install and can be mated to the trans. With that said, go with the 351 so you won't be left wondering if you should have gone bigger
