1952 F-1 throwout bearing issues?
I have a 1952 stock F-1 with the 239 flathead. I rebuilt the transmission with new synchros and bearings. I also put in a new throwout bearing as well as the collar. When I step on the clutch the throwout bearing whines like crazy. I can't understand it. With all new parts why is it still whining? Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Ross, I don't recall making any conscious effort at aligning the forks with the bearing. The action is fairly smooth. I think there might have been some slight side to side play in the fork mechanism but I didn't think any more about it. I suppose if that fork is off center it could make it whine like you said. If that's the case, I should be able to align it without dropping the tranny right?

Know what, I just had a thought; put your foot on the clutch pedal just lightly, so the release bearing is spinning but the tranny gears are still spinning. If it doesn't start making noise, I'd bet it's the pilot bearing. Did you replace that? or grease it? (I believe a bushing is actually standard on the '52's) If it only makes noise when the tranny input shaft is not rotating, I'd bet on it. Don't ask how I know....

As soon as I touch the clutch with very little pressure the whining starts so I'm pretty sure it's related to the throwout bearing. I did replace the pilot bushing with a new pilot bearing. I got my parts from Early V-8 Ford...they all seem like good/new parts. I remember the throwout bearing wasn't USA made.
