Is the 4.0L SOHC a piece of Junk?
#17
I have a 1999 explorer with the 4.0 SOHC, and Im not too impressed. I had oil building up under the intake, and after some investigating, found it to be the head gaskets. It took me 2 months for ford to get the gasket set. " They said they were on national back order," what ever that means.I ended up breaking the right side timing chain cassete trying to pull the head off, so I had to buy new timing chains and gears. Now the ford shop tells me that they just pull the motors out when they have to work on them. Any way thats my sad story,so if anybody has a story close to mine, Id love to hear it.

My wife has a 99 Explorer Sport 4X4 with the 4.0 SOHC engine & auto. So far after 139,000 miles (knock on wood) has had NO problems with the engine or the trans, of course doing regular maintence to both it is running fine. The trans in the Explorer is better at 139,000 miles then the one in my 2000 Ranger 4X4 wth a 4.0 & auto that had the trans rebuilt at 63,000 miles & has been back to the dealer twice because it still slips.

Frankly, I think Ford punted poorly with the 1998-2000 redesign of the Ranger. I had one and learned quickly to unload it. Now, I have a 2003 Ranger with SOHC 4.0 and manual tranny. Bought it used with 9,000 miles, already put 5,000 on it. This little truck flies.
I for one can understand how this engine especially with a manual tranny could be in the new Mustang. Plus - this little dude has yet to return less than 19 mpg and it has 4.10 rear L/S gears and 4X4 too. I'm very pleased.
Not too far a reach for me to see how this engine especially with manual tranny is the base unit for the new Mustang. Ford has apparently made this engine into a real competitor. I for one researched the internet looking for new problems with the latest 4.0 SOHC engines - it's hard to find a complaint.

Ive had no probs with the trans, knock on wood. And I finally found out my oil leak prob. under the intake manifold. It turned out that when the ford dealer updated my timing chain prob. they did not put a gasket on the timing chain tensioner. Which caused it to leak oil under the intake. So beware my ford friends, if you have the timing chain update done & start getting oil under the intake, it could be a bad gasket on the timing chain tensioner for the left head!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as the engine is concerned, is it normal to hear a beep as you accelerate? I'm talking about the high pitched beep that I get at about 1700 RPM
