Excursion Diesel Fuel Economy

Trying to decide between a F250 and Excursion (both diesels) and wanted input as to what fuel economy to expect. A friend with a fairly new F250 claims mileage around 17-18. Any comments?

There are a ton of variables. Load, driving conditions, driver input to the throttle.
I have a 2002 7.3L X 4x4 and get 15 to 16 around town and a couple to three MPG higher on the highway if I keep my foot lightly planted on the throttle (less than 2K RPM). I love mine.

That's exactly what we were getting in our 2000 X 4x4 with the 7.3.

On long interstate trips if I didn't stop a lot (i.e. wife and kids not with me!) I could just hit 20MPG.

I've got a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3L I get 16 in town and around 19 on the highway. I do have the K&N Filter system and a 4 inch exhaust which helped out a little. Getting ready to get the Diablo Predator, anxious to see what I get then. I will let you know.......

I have a brand-new 2005 eX with the 6.0. I have been getting 15 mpg on the freeway and about 10 around town.

Your X is brand-spankin' new! The mileage is bad at first because the engine and transmission haven't been broken in yet. As you continue to drive it, the mileage will pick up to about 15.9-16.5 in town and 16.6-22 (if you're lucky) on the freeway. So fear not fellow X owner.....

Thanks, I have heard that and hopefully it is going to get a LOT better soon, I have less than three weeks and 800 miles so far...

I convinced my wife that we should get the diesel mostly by selling the mileage benefit. She was initially appalled at the noise it made. However after finding out that from the inside it is amazingly quiet, and after finding out she loves driving it she is very happy with my decision.

oh...and the fact that I instantly improved the numbers by setting the computer to metric

But it won't last, my wife is a lot smarter than I am......... http://www.sccollege.edu/faculty/mroe/

My 7.3 X averages about 16.2-16.5 just driving around town. Combined city/fwy it averages about 17.2-17.5. On a long highway run, I could see it averaging about 18, 19, or even 20; provided that I keep it at 65 mph or 1900 rpms. At 70 (2000 rpms), expect the mileage to drop a little. During the winter it drops a bit because of the anti-gelling additives, but it's not too bad of a drop. No matter what, I always get atleast 700 miles out of one tank; provided that I fill it up completely. You know, until the pump "clicks". Then I force feed it another 2-4 gallons depending on where it stopped because the pump clicks at 40 and sometimes 42 gallons (even though I was running on fumes) instead of the full 44.(whatever). So overall, the diesel X or superduty will serve you well. It all about how much room and towing capacity you need. Either way you'll be happy with a diesel.

2004 EX Ltd., 26,500 miles. Estimated 80% interstate at 75 mph and no city. I record every drop and average 17.6. It hasn't gotten better since tank one and only got worse when I towed a 18ft travel trailer, but that's not in this average.

On edit: Although it's probably obvious, the superduty comes with a smaller tank. The short bed models come with a 29 gallon tank, while the long bed models come with a 38 gallon tank. The superduty averages a little less if you don't have a bed cover; so one of those would really help. Best of luck to you.

i have a 2004 x with about 1800 miles on it. i have calculated (not trip meter which says 14.1) around 13mpg (probably a bit less because i know the odometer is off). i just got back from a trip from phx to l.a. (started trip with 800 miles on truck) towed a 3k trailer and got 13mpg. on a side note, what is the "break-in" period for the 6.0 diesel? i have heard everything from 1000 to 20,000 miles.

mileage

My 2005 gets worse mileage than my 2003. 2003 was around 18 average where my 2005 gets only 14.

Give the 2005 time. A diesel can take thousands of miles to break in. (Our '97's mileage was still climbing as we hit 10,000 miles!)
