Well I care, had 5.4 Expedition and it didn't like passing gas stations & it had overhead (we learned to calculate manual). The X is better (both vehicles now are XLT-no overhead) & we write down every fillup/oil change & wife (Teacher) calculates every time. She complains we would get 2 more miles to gallon better if I drove easier & didn't let them idle so much.
As far as too fast, don't think so. Drove to Vegas from Michigan, aprox 36 hours avg 80 - 85 mph. Drove down to Texas and across. Avg 16.8
On return, wife & I drove 33 hours straight through, never shut off truck, she'd run 75. That run was 75-85mph 17mpg
For whatever reason, we got better milage on East Trips than the trip out West, no idea why, both of those trips were the highest readings 19 & 21.
If these things got worse mileage, I'd go back to gassers. Between mileage & towing power, We love the Strokes.

I have just refueled our new 05 excursion for the first time and the mileage it got was 17 mpg, this was a combination of driving to and from work and a long trip to the delaware bay for a day of boating and fishing. Speed to the shore was 65 to70 mph and driving to work was stop and go with trafic lights, I must say this mpg was not expected this early and I hope it gets even better. The only thing I tried to do was keep it under 2000 rpm and watched my takeoff at lights.

Here is Ford's Broadcast message- reprinted on the Dieselman's website:
2003/2004 Fuel Economy:
Ford vehicles equiped with the 6.0 PowerStroke diesel are not rated for fuel economy by the EPA. If economy is in question, a boost test should be performed. If boost reaches 22-25 PSI in third gear, wide open throttle under load, then th engine s operating normally and no economy related repairs need to be performed. If not in specs, then the engine will need to be diagnosed--check sensor reading, VGT and EGR operation, fuel pressure and quality, crankcase pressure, intake or exhaust restriction, exhaust or CAC leaks.
Fuel economy will be affected by many factors, including: excessive idle time (one hour equals approxmately 33 miles of driving), fuel quality and blend, ambient temperature, driving habits, vehicle use, towing, loads, add-on accessories. Broadcast Message 1271
I'd take more stock in the lower numbers here. The HP wars between the Ford, Dodge and GM light truck diesels is coming at the price of lower mpg's from what I've seen and read over the last couple of years on the forums. And that makes sense. The extra power is not free, just as it would not be in a gas motor.
My 03 Ex lmtd 6.0 got about 14.5 all around, 17.5 best ever on the interstate cruising and 11-12 towing my ~4.5k enclosed trailer. I drove it gently 99% of the time because I was always trying to get better mileage out of it. My 01 dmax was the original LB7 motor, of course, and it got 2.5-4mpg better than my 6.0PSD did except towing, where they're about equal. The new LLY motor is down on mileage, too, as is the Cummins 600, from what I've read.
after reading the thread i gota say, if you drive a truck and want a quick mpg help put a light shell on the back, i got instant 2 mpg with my sixpack aluminum shell and no weight added. if ya take it off it drops again, real simple to test and prove.

I have an 04 X deisel with about 3,500 miles. If I keep the RPM < 2k, I can get over 21 on the highway. I can also keep it above 18 in the city. My husband however only seems to get about 15.5 in the city, when he drives.
Refueled for the second time yesterday and got 19.7 MPG on a new 05 X with the 6.0, this was a combination of city and highway driving. I kept the rpm's no higher than 2K while driving and watched the takeoff's,this is much better than the 02 I traded in.
I just recently purchased this truck used with 100,000 miles and it only got 13.5 MPG city/highway. I have spoke with the prior owner and he claims that he regulary serviced the truck on schedule and since the truck is in perfect condition I tend to believe that he did. He stated that he was getting 15-city, 18 Highway. After reading this post and and posts on another site, I'm wondering if there is more than one computer code for a 2000 X 4WD. Could some of you guys that have the same truck post your codes? I might be mistaken but didn't all of the 2000 4WD's have the same 3:73 gears?
I have put some DK grey bottle in when I fueled up and hope that I just happened to get some bad fuel.

Captdave - you have the 7.3L 4 speed auto ?
I presumed some may be stating numbers for the 6.0L 5 speed auto....
a LITLLE different combination....
BUT...
I have to eat crow since I've been pooh-pooh any statements about the 6.0 getting above 19 on the road....
On the way back from Memphis this weekend I slowed WAY DOWN (for me) and kept it around 70 mph.... after 305 miles stopped for the wife potty stop.... and the overhead lie-o-meter was saying 21.5 mpg !!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was way overstated so calced out the 305/14.8 gallons and came out with a VERY respectable 20.6 mpg !!!
Stunning for an 8k+ lb X !!!!!!

Several months back, I read an article that said that fuel mileage with the 6.0L is a function of speed (really... you think)???
The story was that the 6.0L motor gets better mileage at 55mph than the 7.3L motor and others and that for every 10 miles per hour increase, there is a certain percentage decrease in mileage... hence, drive at 65mph with your cruise control and you may get 18 - 21mpg on the highway... go 70, you'll get 16 - 18mpg... and go 75mph or more and you'll get 14 - 16mpg.
We all talk about mpg and what we are each getting, but at what speed, type of fuel, weight and so on....
My 2003 Excursion running D-2 fuel with Power Service (Grey bottle), fully loaded with fuel gets 18mpg on the highway running 75mph. If I slow down to 65 - 70mph (I get 19 - 20mpg).
If we drive our Excursions with reasonable care we should be getting 16 - 20mpg on the highway... (I get 15 - 16mpg in the city without even trying).
Just made a trip from southeastern,Oh to Richmond,VA . Stoped by the state fair and to see family. Tried to keep it around 70 but hard to do sometimes. Run out about one and a half tank of fuel. Got 19.3 mpg for all fuel and miles.
