nanuke1 - may be that you're and old hand at the X now and driving it like the rocket ship it is.... that's what I found with mine... especially after getting the predator...

IF I EVER could drive it less sports car like - think it would do well...

but again - I had no misconception about the fuel mileage when I gought an 8k+ lb vehicle !!!

And WOW is diesel bouncing up in price around here the last few weeks !!!
was always 20 cents cheaper than lowest grade gas... now it's between the mid grade and prem prices !!!!!!!!!!!!!

but still gonna have to rip these keys outta my cold dead hands if they want them back

Nanuke:

It's tough to compare because driving habits vary so much, but I average 18.5 highway. I gained about 1.5 MPG average switching to synthetic oil. The mileage was calculated on back-to-back 800 mile trips to Mexico, one with Delo, the other with Delvac-1. The Delvac-1 is expensive and will probably not pay for itself with fuel savings, but the truck sure runs better with the synthetic oil. My 6.0 Ex has 14,700 miles on it, runs better as the mileage goes up.

I think we're almost to the point of needing an FAQ on ways to improve milage . Anyways, in my 2004 EB 'X, I just achieved 17.54 mpg on a 75 to 80 mph run from Buffalo to Atlanta (mostly on I-79). I had been hoping to make this run with Schaeffer oil --- as some have reported that it doesn't shear and should give a 1-ish mpg benifit over other oils, but I ended up putting in XD-3 as the Schaeffer hadn't arrived yet.

I did get a 1mpg benifit from unplugging the EGR (see other posts).

For some reason the Excursion gets better mileage than the F250. Both trucks are very similiar with the X having limited rear slip and the truck having the regular rear end.

The best ever mpg with the F250 is 18 and the X is 20. The truck averages 16 overall and the X does slightly higher on average. The X has 123K and the truck has 168K. Both run like new still.

Keep in mind that the X has a different PCM program from the F-250, this might explain why the X seems to always get better milage. My 03 did not top out in MPG until after I put over 30,000 miles on it. Since then I have been averaging 19.98 MPG as of the last tank.

A different PCM & program ????

I'm not sure that's a correct statement....

Mine is limited SD knowledge, but because the same predator works on both....
would think that's not the case...

I would tend to believe that the drivers/coniditions/etc...
are more of a factor than anything else and not the same with the comparisons...

the X also has a 1500 lb or so disadvantage to pull around...

NOW you've got me curious to research this... darn you... I had some other things I wanted to do today

I know when I drive the X I get better mileage than my when my wife drives it. When we take the X on long trips all the mileage is hand calculated. The F250 has a fiberglass topper and usually has at least 500 lbs in the box.

It's just odd that in 20K miles the X has gotten a best of 20mpg and in 128K miles the F250 has gotten a best of 18mpg. These number were acheived with me driving them both over a full tank.

Thinking my next work truck may be a stripped down 7.3 Excursion since the mileage is better and the F250 travels up to 60K a year.

Hey guys,

I've got a 2001 PSD Ex. I am getting about 15-16 around town. On long trips like from Salt Lake City, UT to CA, I stopped in Bakers Field to fill up and put in 31 gallons. I had 716 miles on the tach which comes out to 23 miles to the gallon. I mite add that I had a full truck load too. I am running the stock tire size, everything stock with the addition of a K&N air filter is all. I do use Diesel Klien white bottle with every other tank and every fill up in the winter months.

Isn't that also going from 8000-ish ft above sea level to roughly 0?

That isn't an 8K drop, but it is STILL a pretty big drop.

No I said a different PCM program, not a different PCM. Go to the Flatrate Tech site and look up the calibration list for the 6.0L and you will see that the Excursions have a different part no. than the F-250/F-350 trucks.

Makes one wonder what the differences are. I suppose it doesn't have to account for the possibility of having a manual transmission attached.

I wonder if 'X owners are getting different experiences with disconnecting the EGR than SD people?
