Question 4 speed tranny

just wondering if anyone can tell me what the little lever on my 4 speed stick is the truck is a 40's three ton, the lever runs all the way down the stick to the shift ball
I though split trans but not sure
any thoughts?

More than likley it is the reverse lockout lever.

Sounds like a two speed rear end. Crawl under and look for:

==a box in front of the tranny between it and the bell (unlikely)

==an auxilary tranny mounted behind the tranny (maybe)

==a big lump with a motor looking thing and wires on the front of the diff.

Look for some kind of path from that linkage to one of these areas.




The more I think about it, I'm thinking aux. tranny. My dad had a '48 F6 and the two speed was on the dash in front of the floor shifter with a metal instruction plate installed. This was a vacuum control for the two speed.

The '58 F-600 had an electrical switch on the stick for the two speed.

Since you have a mechanical linkage, it would make more sense that is was an aux tranny.....

As I recall, the difference between an F-5 and an F-6 was the two speed axle.

If it goes into the same hole with the lever than it is the reverse lockout. Pulling it up in neutral should allow you to go further right the and down into reverse.
