you can buy seperate units specifically for that purpose. they are computer controlled so they start themselves once a week just to keep everything working. they run on diesel or propane and have a transfer switch which usually comes with the unit. if the power goes off the generator will start and throw the transfer switch automatically. takes less than a minute to go from power out to generator running and power restored to the house. the units can be bought for a couple thousand and up. most that i have installed were enough to run the entire house including everything except the air conditioning. this way you dont have to worry about making the switch yourself it is all automatic.
i have install a few of these for guys out in the country. I even installed one onetime where we mounted the generator on a trailer. that way he could use the generator as a generator and take it where he needed it but it was there if he needed. hope this helps you out. this might be the best way to go or atleast another option to look at. good luck!!!

$1300 buys you a 7kw generator at Home Depot. That's a much better solution, in my humble opinion. 7kw will power your whole home except for AC and electric stove and dryer.
If, if, if you are serious you need to make sure you wire everything up correctly so that power coming back on does not 1.) burn up your generator, or 2.) burn up the transformer on the pole because the generator was still connected and was wired wrong. The best solution is to put a big switch or breaker so that power can only come from the generator OR the utility - not both. If you do it yourself just hope none of your future acquaintances are inspectors!
I'm pretty sure Home Depot has a little kit suitable for wiring a generator to your house.

you can buy a manual transfer switch. that way when you throw the switch it completely disconnects the service lines coming from the pole. this is the way the system should legally be set up and removes all chances of crossing or back feeding power. the same switch disconnects the service before connecting the generator. besides, once the power goes out you dont want to have to be messing with wires or plugs. you want to be able to just go start the generator and throw a switch. they are not that expensive but they are pretty large. most are in an enclosure about 2.5 foot square and 6-8 inches deep. hope this helps.
