just did a search and found this web site showing the current laws on passengers in the cargo area of light trucks. As I see it Iowa has no law regarding this.

actually I read the Iowa laws on seatbelts to only include front seat passengers, so if a cop writes a ticket on passengers in the back seat it is invalid with the exception of anyone under 10yrs of age must be seatbelted in, no matter where they are sitting. So if the ones you are talking about were under 10 that could be the reason.

Nope, late teens, riding around town it the back of a pickup, just hanging out and having fun, not hurting anyone. We have a tendencey to have cops there that like to pick on the kid, intimidation factor. I had a go round with a few, doesn't help when you go to court for it and they won't let the kids up to testify because "why would the cop lie?" Too bad the judges don't have to be elected like they are here, tick off enough people and be looking for a job.

I just talked to my next door neighbor who is a cop here in town and both my uncles who are deptys they told me that you can ride in the back of the truck as long as you are doing it safely . If a cop don't "think" you are not riding safely then he can ticket you

gotta love those if the cop "thinks" things, kinda like the speed limit law in Montana (not sure if this has been changed or not but is the way when they first put the no speed limit law in) everyone thought there was no speed limit, but it actually was whatever speed the officer "thinks" is safe in other words of you are doing 65mph in rain the officer can give you a ticket for speeding even though the old speed limit was 65mph he determined it wasn't safe, so if his wife ran off with some guy that drives a red mustang, he might just give speeding tickets to every red mustang he sees no matter how fast they are going, and it will stick because all he has to say in court was he thought it was to fast, know how do you fight that?

Bust out a topographical map, and file with the National Weather Service for that day. Show the judge the terrain you were in at the time of being pulled over, as well as the weather results from that day and state your case. A REASONABLE person ought to be swayed. And if you were in curves...um...you should have had you corvette anyways? ^_^
