As with all decades throughout history the 80's had many good times, but there were some tough times too.
*Stock market took a dive in 87.
*Early 1980 opened with nasty inflation.
*Medical costs began to escalate in the later 80's.
*Interest rates were right up there in the late 80's.
*American manufacturing jobs were lost to foreign competitors. We slept through the wake up call.
*Arms race made some people skittish. There was a saying "how can you hug your kids with nuclear arms".
*Hinkley attempted to assasinate president Reagan. Sarah Brady's husband takes a bullet in the attempt, becomes paralyzed, and later goes on to lead an anti-gunner crusade.
*We lost a space shuttle in 1986 (blew up on take off).
*WPPSS (became known as whoops) defaults on bonds around 1983, leaving investors, many elderly, with declimated savings. Electric utilities were safe investments, right?
*Pan Am flight 103 crashes in Lockerbie in 1988. The plane was bombed by terrorists.
*Exxon Valdez, with a drunk in control, runs into a reef in Alaska spilling something like 11 million gallons of oil in 1989.
*The Yugo and Hyundai became available in showrooms.
*A nuclear reactor explodes in Chernobal in 1986, blowing the roof off. Russia tries to do a cover up, but with a cloud making it way around the planet finally concedes to what happened.

Haa haa the 80's.. It was a whole different world in the smoking section in high school back then, then it is now. Or at least I can imagine so, didn't graduate until mid-90's. The hair (mullets like no other), the clothes (acid washed jeans?? aye carumba!!!), and the cars (trans am coolest car ever, puhhleeze!!!). And the technology, holy crap has that gotten out of control (in a good way). As far as I'm concerned, the 80's were a mess, the 90's seemed to get better and these days it's the best. That could be cuz I can legally drink nowadays and drive (not together mind you) a bad @$$ truck compared to what I used to drive.

"if you remember the 60s you must not have been there."
I remember every decade from the 40's on, I remember five-cent juke boxes, 12-once nickle Pepsi, 12-cent movies, newspaper "Extras", all the wars, and some great cars. I remember being hired to work on one of the first computers built, hearing the beginning of rock and roll and seeing my first jet plane. I do not remember any of the bands listed.
