i need to know what piston is the #1 cylinder so i can time it on a 1968 534 in a T850 dump truck i just purchased ?? it has all new ignition and it runs like it is laboring all the time?? also need to know what the timing specs are ???

Driver side front is my guess. Look on the runners of the intake manifold...sometimes the numbers are cast on those.

If you go off the Driver side front vs. pass side front, your timing light should tell you if you are close, and then you can adjust from there.

 

i always thought on v-8's that they were as looking towards the rear.

I had one heck of a time re-ordering the wires on one that someone had screwed up the order on, I could not for the life of me figure out the cylinder numbering. I had to take off the valve covers and take out the spark plugs and put bits of solder in the holes and then have someone bump the starter so I could see which order things were working in. This is what I came up with:

The reason I had such a hard time with it was that I had always been taught that the forward most cylinder was number 1, not so in this case.

#1 should be the front passenger side....
