Exclamation 98 f-150 4.2L low power and gas mileage

Someone please help if they can. I can tried going to ford but they want to charge me my arm and leg to find out what is wrong. If you are a a stop and try to go the truck seems like it has no power and good luck trying to get across a intersection. I have replaced the tps and plugs and wires and ford says it could possiably be a wire to my pcm andy suggestions would help

if you unplug the iac and it gets better does that mean that it is bad?

I would think that the engine would stall when you unplugged the IAC, but I'm not certain.

What year and engine does your truck have? What kind of trouble are you having with it, and what have you done to date to identify the problem?

Well I am not certain that it would be that but the only thing I know is that if you unplug the sensor that is on the tube that goes to the airfilter it idles better. I have my own topic titled my truck go to that and read what is wrong with my truck and what has been done

The IAC is located on top of the throttle body, underneath the plastic cover. It's held on by two bolts and has one electrical connector.

It sounds to me like you disconnected something else, maybe the MAF sensor or the IAT sensor.

This is confusing, maybe when the moderator swings by he can combine these posts.

What size engine do you have? Does your truck idle poorly or stall at idle? Or do you just have a lack of accelerating power at low RPM's? As you apply throttle does the problem go away? Is your check engine light on?

it is a 4.2L v6. the check engine light has not come on. it doesn't really idle poorly it is more when you accelerate. as you apply throttle it doesn't really get better it's kinda like it gets better with speed in a way

Well, if it's idleing Ok, then it's probably not the IAC. Maybe the IAT like you mentioned in your other post. I don't have much experiance with the IAT so I'm not really sure what symptoms would show up if you had a bad one. I would imagine it would be something like you described.

Some one will be by eventually to offer some more info on the subject.

I'd like to find out if it was definately the IAT you disconnected that caused it to run better. Did it look like this picture?

or was it the MAF:

If you were standing toward the truck it was on the left toward the back of the air filter assembly area. I don't know if that helps. It didn't really idle better but if you put it in drive and pressed the gas (while holding the brake) it sounded better. The other thing is sometimes when you are driving and accelerating it will sound like it just sucked in a bunch of air kinda like a backfire in a way but not in the exhaust

They are both located in that area, but I think you are talking about the IAT.

Perhaps one of the experts will be by later tonight and lend an opinon.

I read what you said about the iat sensor on another post if your pcm was bad would that make it to where you couldn't get any codes even though there is a problem with your vehicle

Yeah, but I've never heard of a PCM going bad. Not that it can't happen, becuase I'm sure it has, but I would think you would have many more symptoms if that were the case.
