1997 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4

Started this problem this morning:

Got in the truck
Radio light is on. Hmmm.
STart it up and head to work. SPeedometer working at this time. Dont know if guages were working or not. Did not look.
Got to work and turned off truck and took key out.
Door open alarms goes off, but door is closed. Driver Window will not roll down.
Clicking / poping sound from under the dash.
Restart engine. Guages not working, Drove around the parking lot. Now speedometer not working,
Has now started shifting very hard through the transmission. and its also shifting at a higher RPM than usual as well.

I would start out by checking all fuses

Did you wash the truck very recently? Was it raining this AM or overnight?

OK, I may be a little out of it on this one, but how old is the battery...I've seen others have some of these same problems and it was due to low power to the electronics.

Just a thought.

Good luck,

Tim

Heh GW. It sounds like your GCM/ECM (General Control module/Electronic control module) mine went out and it did similiar things. It basically is part of the computer that controls a lot of the electronic accessories. Sometimes they will get wet and fried from a leaking windshield. I paid about $160 or so to have an electronic shop troubleshoot and replace it. good Luck. let us know.

Paul C,

The rains from Tropical storm really soaked us down yesterday in Alabama.
Related? Interesting.Thanks

Tim,
I will try the new battery. Thats doable tonite.

00Expo,
Can you tell me where the GCM/ECM is located and how to evaluate it and replace?
Maybe someone else knows about this and the process.
$160 to fix would be perfect.

My latest this afternoon:

The transmission would not shift from low gear at all, then 10 minutes later it shifts perfect.
The window is now rolling up and down perfect.
The Air conditioner fan will blow and radio will work without the key in.
The keyless remote no longer locks or unlocks the door, and reprogramming with the 5 on/off cycles will not set the programming into effect.
I think its possessed.

Thanks for all your input everyone and keep itr coming.. I just saved up the money to buy this ride,,(first Ford product) and I really dont have alot of spare income to give the dealership right now.

First determine how the GEM (located above the fuse panel) is getting wet. Next, replace it.

Can you guys or gals answer this for me.

Do I have to have the GEM programmed by Ford during or after installation?

I found the GEM today at the local dealership, told him I was going to install it, and he informed me I would have to have it programmed by them at a charge of $70.
I did not remeber reading anywhere that I would have to have this service done. I was under the impression (maybe wrongly) that it was plug and play
Thanks for any further information you can provide me.

3 days of drying out and I guess the GEM must have dried out as well. All is working perfectly. Go figure. Now to isolate the leak. IS the windshield the first place to look?
any areas need silicone? any way to protect the GEM internally?

Thanks

At risk of doing something against forum rules, (not intended at all)
.
Just would like to ask once more if anyone knows if the GEM module requires reprograming to work once I self replace it on my 97 Expedition EddieBauer 4x4 in my driveway. I dont want to install it only to find it dont work..
Any help appreciated.
I just dont want my local dealer to be jerking my chain and pocketbook, which he has the reputation of doing to unknowing customers.
If it requires reprogamming,,, thats fine,,,, but I dont want to pay $70.00 to do a reprogram of my keyless entry and call that a reprogramed GEM. I can do the key on/off 5 times part myself

Thanks in advance for any input.

GW.

I found nothing you said to be anywhere close to a violations of the Forum Guidelines.

ANd to answer your questions. Unless you know for a fact that the GEM you get is the same code as the old one or a newer updated code, I would have it programmed just to be safe.

Oh wait...I'm thinkin' of the PCM.

Hell, put it in and see what happens. What's the worse that could happen?
