Hello...

I have searched here and on various other sites on the net for the answer to my question with no definate success. If I duplicate an answer somewhere, I apologize in advance.

I have a 93 Areostar and my horn no longer works. I read some places about it being linked to the cigarette lighter and cruise control (both of those work). So I went and spent the $10 to get a new one... Now I can't find the damn thing. I looked under the hood, by the fuse box, even looked up under the dash (didnt take it apart yet though). I can't seem to find the thing.

Can anyone please tell me where it is on my model?
I don't know if this at all matters, but its an XLT extended with the 4.0L engine.

Well, since you haven't gotten an answer yet, let me give it a shot. I have the factory electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual for a '95, but I suspect that the location would be the same, but no guarantees. It says "behind lower LH side of instrument panel, right of steering column." When I look at the picture, it looks like it's due west of the radio, about half way between the radio and steering column. It's got a five pin connector with only four wires going to it. Wire colors are dark blue, yellow/light green, yellow/light blue and yellow/light blue (both y/lb wires are hot at all times). I'm telling you this because the horn relay sits next to the sliding door ajar relay, which is another 5 pin connector with four wires.

You're correct about suspecting the horn relay. The horn relay and cruise control both get power from the same fuse. From there, they both go through the same pin on the clock spring assembly (although the cruise gets power from several pins on the clock spring, while the relay only gets power from one pin). The cruise and horn relay also share a ground (again, the cruise has more grounds), so if the cruise works, then it's likely the relay. But, don't forget to check the grounds for the horns. If those aren't any good, then the horns won't work even if the relay is good. The horns appear to be directly grounded to the chasis, probably through the mounting screws. The book doesn't show any ground wires for the horn. While you've got the connector off, check the resistance between the dark blue wire and ground. Not sure exaclty what it should be but open (high resistance) is bad. Finally, the horns could be suspect as well.

 

 

i'm having similar problems with my 92. no horn or cruise, cig lighter works. i removed the horn and ground the mount and chassis to get a good ground. i then jumped the horn to the battery and it worked. i'll replace the relay and see if that works. please let me know if replacing yours works.

open horn and cruise control switch circuits in the "clockspring" unit in the steering wheel under the air bag.

search on here for clockspring. they may not be available from Ford any longer, may have to replace with a good junke yard dog.

 

Ok all you people out there. I own a 1992 Aerostar XL. The Clock Spring shorted to ground and eliminated my Horn, Cruise and gave me an AirBag code. I searched and searched but because this Clock Spring is a discontinued part, it was no longer available from Ford. Then I found 23 available from Green Sales Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. I contacted them, they carry NOS (not available; obsolete; stock) for Ford. Long story short, if you are in need of a Ford obsolete part, you might contact Green Sales Company. They might just have what you are looking for. I ordered the part Monday, June 18th. It was shipped that night and I received the new Clock Spring today, Wednesday, June 20th. Mark in sales handled my call and order.
I was very impressed with his professional attitude.
