Roll-top covers

I would like to purchase a locking sliding/rolling bed cover for my new fx4, with 5.5 ft. bed. What do you think is the best product out there of this type? Ease of use, looks, security, water tightness, COST, etc. What is the installation like....or is it best to have them installed professionally? Thanks! This is a great site...have found a ton of useful information on here already!

Talking Pace-Edwards Bedlocker

I bought the Pace-Edwards Bedlocker and I love it, remote control motorized open/close,you can stop it at any point in the open or close cycle if you only want it open part way,,,and a cinch to install, excellent directions, no drilling. Top is smooth including canister area, no unsightly bump. It also comes with option to wire remote into doorlocks so you only need one remote, instead of the factory one I use the PE one. This unit is kinda pricy though ($1350) but to me its worth the extra to have somthing like this on my truck and is most secure as motor locks cover and cant be jimmied. Also quality of this unit is excellent and I expect it to last. In a word... GETIT.<!-- / message -->

I have the roll-n-lock. I have been very happy. I think it is around $ 900. You should compare with the Pace Edwards. I believe it is manual only.

I have a cover on the other end of the spectrum...the Xtang RT. I paid only $250 for it, and I am fairly pleased. The cover is nice, but doesn't get as tight as my previous two trucks which I used the Access Cover model. The Access Cover is a slightly nicer design, but not nearly as simple. The Access is nearly $150-200 more than the Xtang, which I only paid $250 for. It is very very simple to operate and is more weather proof than the Access. It's hard to compare though on that issue since the Xtang on my new truck is used without a tool box, whereas my last two covers were Access Tool Box Edition boxes which never sealed very well against the tool box. There's still smaller gaps on the corners with the Extang over the Access. The Xtang was a joke to install...maybe 20 minutes vs. at least a full hour with the Access. MUCH better side rail clamps on the Xtang which use an integrated tie down hook, similar in size to the stock bed tie downs. It's a toss up. The Xtang is more flush with the bed, cheaper, uses a better style of velcro, and has much better engineered side rail clamps. The Access has a much more subtaintial look and feel, with easier roll up. It also has much higher tension capabilities making it flop around less in the wind on the highway.

Are any of these tops waterproof. I was reading of one that said 100% waterproof. When I called a dealer about the Pace Edwards they said it was not waterproof.

Pace edwards is not waterproof, but the amount of water that gets past it isn't too bad.

I have a TonneauMaster by Sportmaster on my Lariat SCREW. Cost arond $325, and very easy to install. Rolls up easily, and is tight (easy to adjust depending on weather). I don't remember if it was advertised as water tight, but I had the truck sitting outside during Frances and Ivan, and didn't get a drop in the bed. I'm very happy with it.
