Question Converting R-12 to R-134A

While I am asking questions and waiting for help on another problem here is an AC question. I bought a conversion kit for r-12 to r134a. I went to the auto shop to have the system drained of the r-12 and to make sure the system had a vacuum. Well it turns out the system has a leak but the r-12 was removed. My qiestion is how well does the leak stop included in the cans of r-134a freon conversion kits work. I would hate to do the conversion and waste all that freon to a leak.

Find the leak by using a dye, and fix it properly. It's probably just an o-ring, that's usually what it is. Or a leaky schrader valve (looks like a valve stem on a tire).

Finding and fixing the leak is a great first step. Checker/parts america sells the flurescent dye kit at a good price. I havn't done any conversions yet ( I have a nice stock of R12 hidden away) but what I have seen and heard is to for the best success is replacing all O-rings and completely flush the system.

Use freeze 12 instead of r-134a. Just put some in my bronc, and its colder in idle than 134.

I agree with pilot815. 12 is seems to be much colder......and dont waste your time with the leak stop.....do it right the first time and you wont have to worry about it.....
