old steel cranks

are there any advantage to the new cranks over the old steel cranks

Are you talking about new forged, or new steel cranks? The forged will be stronger, and handle more power than an old steel one

Many "old" cranks are forged. Just look on the crank for the parting line from the mold; if it's got one it's a cast crank.
