Today when running some errands me and my dad come accros this 77 F-250 4x4. Anyway we went and talked to the owner and he said that he would take 1500 for it and that it has a new rebuilt 400 with flat tops and all the necessary work done to run it on propane. The truck has a 4sp and a divorced mounted 205 t-case along with a full foat 10.25 rear axle and what i thonk is a dana 44. But once i got to checking it out i discovered that the truck has the bigger 1 ton hubs and crossover steering along with a very weird power steering setup but the diff itself looks relativly small for a 60. Also just below the diff cover on the housing (left side below the axle tube when looking at it from the front of the truck) I found the numbers 44 60E. Now is this axle a dana 60 or is it a 44?
it's probably the heavy d44. they came in alot of these trucks. its a dana 44 with dana 60 outers. or maybe its a dana 60 with a d44 center section. either way i think im sayin the same thing. thats probably what it is though.
the rear probably is a 60. I don't think ford started using the 10.25 until the 80's
dang it...i must be slipping in my old age...you are totally correct! ford didn't utilize the 10.25 until 1985. although the 10.25 and D60 rears both look a lot alike the D60's have a fill plug on the cover and the 10.25 has it on the front out of sight
Well thats 2 things I've learned today, i went out and checked and i have the dana 60 underneath my 81 mudder, when all this time i've thought it was the 10.25.
seemed like i saw a bunch of foreign language up there.. im not understanding dana 44's and 60's and 10.25's i need help.. fishy you're gonna have to make this make sence to me
dana 44's 60's 10.25 are all types of axles, as for the dana 44 and dana 60, they are made by dana and the number is the model. The D60 is much larger and much stronger than the D44. The D44HD is a crossbreed between the two axles. The 10.25 is made by visceon (spelling?) and it's name originated from it's ring gear diameter 10.25"
well define best(excluding rockwells and above).... strongest = D60 front, D70/corp 14/D70/D80 rears, best clearance = D60 rear/D44 front, cheapest in stock form = D44
