ROMP-ROMP and die on warm startups

My truck just started doing something odd. On hot startups, if I don't sit and wait for the glowplug light to go out, it romps a few times, and then dies.

Anyone know what's wrong with it?

Thanks!

When was the last time you changed the oil?

Changed the oil about 1.5k ago. I washed the engine compartment the day it started, and I wonder if I got a sensor or something wet. I've done this tons of times before without a problem, and don't know why that would only have an effect when the engine is warm.

Hmm that should be recent enough oil change. Well I would start by checking all the sensors. Unplug and clean if necessary. If the engine wash is really the culprit you may have run some dirt and/or water down into one of the plugs. Did you use a pressure washer? Or a degreaser and water hose?

Just Simple Green and a garden hose.

That night it did something really wierd when I made a run to the store - when I left my house and took off up the hill it felt relly sluggish. by the time I was about a block away, I had to have it floored to maintain 15mph. When I let off at the top of the hill it died. Restarted right away and ran fine. Since then, if I don't let the glow plugs cycle long enought when warm, it romps a couple of times and dies.

What do you think guys? HPOP pressure sensor? Complete loss of fuel pressure and needs the glow plug time to build back up? If this was a VW I would say MAF but it's a PSD and it does not have a MAF, I am still learning myself here.

Noticed something else this morning - it does the exact same thing when cold. I guess I'm just used to letting the glow plugs cycle fully when cold, and I didn't used to wait for them when warm.

I think that since the problem started immediately following an engine wash, it's probably water in a sensor. I would guess the ICP sensor since it has the power to shut the truck off and is right up on top where water can get at it. IPR could be it too, but it's location behind the HPOP should keep it shielded. EOT, EOP, and ECT are also up on top, but I don't think any of those could kill the truck.

Would this kill the sensor? Or can it be cleaned?

Dunno. I hope not, it's expensive. I would definately try blowing out both connectors and cleaning any corrosion off the pins first. ICP will normally set a code when it goes, have you gotten a check engine light at any point since it started acting up?

I can't find it now that I need it, but it seems like it's around $100

have you figured out the issue yet with your truck - mine just started doing the exact same thing last week - even when warm I can make it do the romp romp thing just by giving a little gas and then letting off - also at idle its randomnly shaky.

Figured it out over the holiday weekend. It was the plug on the ICP sensor. When I unhooked it and fired up the truck, I couldn't duplicate the problem - hook it bak up, and the problem returned. Cleaned and straightened the connecting pins and sockets, and all is well now.
