it says im in R but mmy tranny is in park....2 is D and so on....what is going on..shifter is offset some how..grr

Sounds like the cable leading up to the steering column is out of adjustment. It's the one that controls the gear indicator on the dash panel. If you look under the steering column you will see a little white wheel with a cable going thru it. Thats the adjustment for the gear indicator in the dash. Unless you really did bend the linkage....ie: four wheeling or the truck fell off a cliff....
