55 f100 panel with rear side windows

Hi all. i just bought a 1955 f100 panel that has side windows in the back. I have never seen one with these windows. Can anyone tell me about them? were they a factory option? Are they rare? anyone tell me how many were made? where can i find pic's or info on the net?

Thanks Paul

You wouldn't have happened to have bought it in Vallejo would you?

Rear windows were one of those things back when conversion vans were the in thing to do. Not a factory option that I know of.

Just a thought. I seem to recall the local ambulance of that era having
glass side windows.
If it isn't rare, it is unusual.

There were several companies that did conversions for ambulances, flower cars, crew vans etc.. Some got windows, some got extra doors and windows.

I forgot all about the ambulance conversions! (Don't tell my last boss that! LOL!)

Yes Paul, a friend of mine in Vallejo has a 55 panel body and frame only for sale. It had windows cut into the back and a hole for a sunfoof. I thought I perhaps he had sold it, and I hadn't heard yet!

Good luck with your project, post pics in your gallery so we can check it out! Welcome to the boards, fellow panel owner. 55 is a good year,

International Red Cross had lots of them, at least one per city as I recall. There is a straight 56 for sale in my backyard. The window is at the rear quarter and is not rectangular, it is semi eliptical with 2 straight cuts ( 1 ea 90 degree corner). I have been told that they served for extra light and to eliminate the blind corner for backing. Both make sense to me. Photos at request.

I had a '62 ****** Utility Wagon, ex-Civil Defense or Forest Service, that had very "factory" looking windows, that were not factory. They were made by cutting the panel with a template, then a rubber molding would fit over the edge of the sheet metal and the rubber retained the window glass. The ******' that had factory rear windows had a reinforced window frame and sliding window glass. I was told that windows like mine were done by glass and custom body shops in the '60's. Sounds like what you have?

They actually belong to a friend of mine who has a wide selection of effies and parts to same. He has a big yard , so not a prob having about 10 or more effies at one time.
