Ok here it is. 1974 F250 4x4 390 2bbl supposedly has 40k on it Trans. is sitting in the bed of the truck with a brand new clutch in it just has to be put back in. The front dif. is shot but he has a replacement in the bed for that as well just needs to be put in. The cab part of the body is in pretty good shape, no rust as well as the front fenders. The box has rust holes above the tires (go figure) Passenger door won't shut unless it's SLAMMMMMEDDDDDDD!!! And he want's $1000 for it. Do you think it's worth it? $1000 seems high to me considering all the work I would have to do to it.

I'd try to get him to come down. But I'd try if he was only asking 200. That seems like an awfull lot when you have to put all that work into it. And how how'd he destruct the front diff in only 40k?

Not that it is a comparison but I got mine for 400 but it's rusted bad. The cab is about the only hole free part of the truck besides the frame.

 

The motor has been swapped out, not the original. Not to get off the subject but shouldn't this have a divorced transfer case because this one doesn't

 

it should, that was a trademark part of the highboys, and why they had the narrower frame I think, Where was the gas tank? It should be behind the seat. If it isn't you got the same problem I was looking at here. The highboys were the early model of monster truck because of the divorced case. I also liked the case setup because it gave me more freedom for engine/trans choice. The original setup for power steering had a hydraulic cylinder on the steering linkage and a manual gear box that passed through the frame. the pitman arm is perpendicular to the ground as well.

 

Not sure where the gas tank was I guess I didn't pay that close attention to it. As for the t-case I think it was stock that way. The guy I might buy it from bought it from the original owner. But maybe when they switched the motor they kind of changed that all around too? Not sure why, but maybe? It has a 4spd manual in it right now. Is that a good tranny? I know where I can get a c-6 and switch it over to an auto.

 

can't really answer to the trans, I had the C6. Got a 2wd that has the 4speed, things are a little strange with it though, syncros are out I think, or clutch trouble. I didn't run it much, had too many problems, like constantly overheating without being worked all that hard. It is my understanding that all 4x 3/4's prior to 78 had the narrow frame, but all the 2wd's had the wider frame and after 73 had the tanks mounted to the frame rather than in the cab. As far as I know, the 3/4's had the divorced case until 78 as well, but I may be wrong. Check out the 73 79 forum, do a search on highboys, see what you can learn is the best thing to do, or post this question there too. They can educate you better than I can.

I forgot to post this earlier as well. What kind of brakes came standard on these? My friends is kind of a hodgepodge 75-76 (we think) and his has drums all the way around it. This one actually has disc brakes up front the new front axle that he has to replace the bad one has disc brakes as well. Is that the dif. from the dana 44 to the dana60? Mine had drums, but from some of the posts on the 73-79 forum, there may have been some that had disc, but divorced case is apparently a must to qualify as a highboy.

 

they had drims until 75, in 76 was the switch to front disks, but some of the early 76s might have still had drum brakes.

 

Well I think I'm going to get this truck. Got another question for everyone. The front dif. is "stripped out" that's what he told me. He has a new front axle sitting in the bed of the truck that's coming with it. Is it easier to change out the whole axle or can I just change the gears out? Thinking it would be much easier if I just had to change out the gears. On the plus size he works for a large trucking company and said he could just push it onto his drop deck trailer and haul it over here for me and then I don't have to find a trailer it will fit on!

It is tricky to get the gears set right, and it can and typically is different from housing to housing. that's what crush sleeves are about. Since it is not the drive axle, you might get away with it, but if you plan on using 4wd a lot, it would be best to change the whole axle, if you don't have the equipment to set up the gears. I've gotten by on it, but it's usually my stuff, so my problem to deal with if it fails. It really isn't that hard to switch the whole axle.

 

Yeah, I've never tried messing with the gears. Probably end up having more time in it switching the gears and getting everything right then just switching the whole axle. I suppose I'll hve to get the front end realligned after I get the new axle put in though. More money I don't have, the old lady will love that

 

Can you get 35" tires on one of these trucks without lifting it more than it?already is? It's got 33"s on it now.

 

35's are close, but I believe it will clear, friend of mine years ago had 35's on his, and don't recall him ever doing anything to it, they were close, but no rub, even with running boards. The only alignment they can do is toe, so it shouldn't cost too much.
