What was the best overall inline six?

Of all the inline sixes Detroit ever produced, which one do you guys think is the the best overall: Power, Longevity, Reliability, and so forth? I know I own one, but I say it's Ford's 300 I6. They just seem to keep running and running, no matter how hard you beat on em and abuse them. What do you guy's think?

AMC 232/258- It's got 7 main bearings, one tough bottom end. The Jeep 4.0 is a derivitive of this engine. Also, can't forget the Mopar 170/198/225 Slant 6.

A better question is this: what was the WORST inline 6? So many of these engines are indestructable, it's hard to think of one that wasn't a great, long-lasting engine. Pontiac OHC, maybe? Not that familiar with it myself, though.

I'm gonna have to go with the John Deere 414ci inline 6. 275hp at and 2400rpm, and 756 lb-ft of torque at 1400rpm... drool... I want one in my truck!

John Deere engine.

I know it isn't a 6 cyl., and I know I'll probably get laughed out of the thread, but I had a 2.3 liter 4 banger that was as indestructible as you guys say those 6's were. At 108k I had to replace the timing belt and a head gasket at about 115k. Other than that, the thing was in almost perfect shape.

My grandad used to rave about the old slant 6 and how tough it was. Maybe that's the reason they quit making those things...

Chevy 6 was always best

Best inline 6? Chevys 250....from cars to trucks, them things would run forever. Fords 6 was a close second but more prone to oil burning and noise, while Dodges slant 6 was third, if you could keep enough oil in them to run!

The mopar slant six was the best I6 IMO. I don't know much about the GM I6, but I don't like Chevy's. The 300 I6 is a great engine as well, but it relyability is second to the slant 6.

I have to admit, I like the Jeep 4.0, even with blow by they would still keep going to at least 300K miles. BUT the best combo for torque and reliability would be the 4.2 Jeep Block with a Jeep 4.0HO head and Mopar Fuel Injection, tons of torque from the 4.2 block but would scream with the HO head and fuel injection. Sorry guys I used to own an 89 Jeep and did this to it, it was insane the torque and power it had-Spun 35's on stock axles with 3.07's

Some of you guys mentioned some engines that I didn't think of when I posted this thread, yes I have to agree with a lot of them. The Mopar Slant, an ugly a$$ engine but you just can't seem to run those motors down too easily. The Chevy 250...yep right up there with the 300 Ford, it didn't make as much torque none the less, it was still an outstanding engine. One reason I think have discovered why some people don't like inline sixes, mainly the older ones. They seem doggy, yes they do at times but they just don't seem to care if you beat on em. That's why I love em soo much. It's too bad a lot of companies are going to a wimpy a$$ V6 for their base engines in the light duty pickups. Yeah the new V6s feel quicker, but they don't haul a load the same! Thanks guys...keep em coming!
