Can you describe this hiccup in more detail? Do you clean the regulator screen when you had the fuel filter out? Have you checked the HPOP oil level? Does the truck have a chip? Air filter clean? Any other driveability issues that may be influencing the problem?

Hey,
mine has a problem as well. Maybe a hiccup as you state, but at about 35-40 mph with slight throttle (like on flat ground), I am getting a jerking, lungeing type movement that feels like someone is playing with my back bumper. I have replaced CPS, and vehicle speed sensor in the rear axle ($25). I first cleaned the VSS, and I thought that the problem had gone away. I later went ahead with the change and I still get the hiccups. I have a code showing #1395 (glow plug monitor bank #1) that I have not been able to find the cause of. I have been told that the code only comes up with California emisions vehicles. I do have a code reader that can be purchased at Kragen auto parts or as I did on Ebay. It says Innova 3100 (OBDII) and it goes for about $100. The book that came with the reader did not show this code, but I found it on their website. Check their website at codereader "dot" com.

Cookie88,
I joined in on this one, as it may pertain to my hiccup? Please tell me a bit more re: the HPOP. Location, how to check oil level, etc.
THANKS IN ADVANCE...

Same problem

I also have a hiccup in 97 crew cab Just started three weeks ago. From time to time when it happens the check engine light comes on when its a big one. Changed fuel filter and drain a lot of water out of the water dain valve. And I would also like to know where the HPOP oil is.

Any help would be great thanks.

Underneath the plastic engine cover. It the large rectangular reservoir on the front engine cover. There is a small plug on the top, drivers side. Just pull the plug and make sure the reservoir is full, or at least no more than 1" low.

A low HPO level generally will manifest itself through starting problems more than driveability problems. If you are throwing codes you may have an IPR or ICP problem. You need to have the codes pulled.

Thanks, where does the oil go to end up being low? Leak outside, pass on to injectors?
Thanks again...

Cookie,
Had a chip in Mine, and took it out to see if that was the problem. But the Hiccup
is still there, I have no other driveability problems, Truck starts and runs good.
Just has the Hiccup problem, It feels like the truck is shutting off and then coming back on
like in an old car if you turned the key off while coasting and turned it back on. Its a quick one second loss of power, then everythig is aok.
I was wondering if the Gas pedal switch can cause this??
The truck has 256k on it now too if that matters.

69CrewCab, need to get the codes read. I was having similar problems with my 97. It turned out to be the barometric pressure sensor. Go figure. With the sheer number of sensors and electronic controls on these trucks some sort of scanner is almost as necessary as a screwdriver to have in your toolbox.
Good luck,
Mike

Did anyone ever resolve this issue? My CPS went out 3 weeks ago and the hiccup stayed until I cycled the fuel pump a few times and let the truck idle for almost 20 minutes. Now today the dang CPS went again but now I can't get rid of the hiccup. All codes, with the exception of the exhaust back pressure, have been cleared and no new ones have popped up. I also changed the fuel filter, checked to make sure the bowl was clean and filled it with power service before replacing it. The truck will idle just fine, run 10 to 15 mph just fine. However, getting the truck going from a stop or under a load such as up a hill the hiccup comes back. When it does the engine has a very distinct knock, sounds a lot like it did when I had the fuel pick up issue, but my tank is full.

Any thoughts where to look next? Everyone local I've talked to said they never had these problems when replacing the CPS.

Sounds like it could be fuel pressure. How long has it been since your fuel filter has been changed? Can you put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see what it is under load at WOT?

I just replaced the fuel filter today after doing the CPS and taking it out for a ride. That was my first thought. As soon as the rain stops I will put a pressure gauge on it and try that.

Corroded or loose connections in the wire harnesses are worth looking for as well. Any wires that you have messed with lately would be suspect. Those pins in the harness to the CPS should be clean looking. Larry
