I have a Reg cab FX4. 18's oringinal. Going through the vibration thing. Taking it back tomorrow for the 3rd time. Waiting for the Lemon Law to kick in. I don't think they are going to get it fixed anytime soon.
Can I have a show of hands if you are having steering wheel shimmy and if you run OE tires and wheels or not.
Nope, nein, no, não, non. :-) 5 months and 5,000 miles on stock tires.
I'd never even heard of the problem until visiting this forum. I haven't researched the issue, since it hasn't happened to me, but I would dare bet that the problem is likely exacerbated by large wheels. Ask Ford and they will tell you that the truck wasn't designed for 20+ rolling stock. In fact ALL OEM's are having these kinds of problems (i.e., various premature failure problems of front-end hardware) due to the popularity of such large wheels. Guess what? If you experience premature wear or failure of a front-end component with a large wheel on board, that WILL NOT be a warranteable claim.
What happened to the stock wheels and tires? Can't you try those out before throwing in the towel?
Reg cab FX4 and no shimmy at all at any speeds. I don't remember any one even balancing a tire off an 04 F150 in my dealership. This is the only source where I found out that some trucks are having a shimmy problem. I wouldn't normally buy any vehicle first year production, but I've seen very few problems with the 04 F150's. I did buy a late production truck but still haven't seen any chronic problems with any early builds either.
The two F-150 Screws that I test drove had steering wheel shimmy and the front end seemed to be jumping around. Still looking at buying one but I will make sure I get it up to all speeds.

I did not have the shimmy, until ford rotated my tires. Now I have it 65-75 mph. Just a little bit though. I have the upgraded goodyear tires. I have also noticed that the weight on the front rims are about 2 times the size of the rear.
I've got a wheel shimmy between 65-75 mph. I had the tires rotated and balanced, which fixed the shimmey for approx. a week, then it came back. I have not pursued the matter any further

I made that same remark when after I bought my truck and the service manager said that even though the '04 is much revised, there is a lot of carry over from previous years. The motor's complete bottom end for example is the same as the 2 valve 5.4. The trans is a carry over as well if memory serves. It made me feel a bit better about the whole thing, but naturally if something goes wrong I will blame it on the new model year.
