RVfiver..
That was my first thought, why. Maybe he's an old dude like me. Back in my steel hauling days in Pittsburgh guys had their own ideas of what to add for more power that includesd tranny fluid, motor oil, alcohol, gasoline, etc..I thought they were nuts. Nothing went in my Mack but diesel fuel.

This is a quote from Diesel Injection service which I agree with:
Using ATF as a diesel fuel additive..
A known practice especially amongst truckers is the adding of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to diesel fuel. According to tests performed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) the lubrication benefit from ATF is very slight. The effects and consequential damage that could result from the use of ATF in diesel fuel has not been determined. The addition of ATF in diesel fuel also changes the chemical make-up of the diesel fuel which could result in penalties for use of a NON-EPA approved fuel. ATF is not an additive and it's use could result in costly repairs and/or fines, a more proven and effective conditioner should be used when treating diesel fuel..... More on this to come in the next few months..

i was in the tire shop about four months ago and this guy was telling me that your supposed to put chainsaw oil in your tank for lubrication and anti gelling. i think that guy was a few bricks short of a load. i just kinda shook my head and said "oh yeah" to the guy. different strokes for different folks i guess. i use howes deisel additive in mine!

I use Diesel Kleen too, I fling a few ounces into every fill-up. It makes a noticeable difference; there's no more black smoke at startup, and it idles a lot smoother.
I think oldtimers who flung every darn thing they could get their hands on into their big old work diesels got away with it because those big ole engines are so tough.

i prime new fuel filters with atf. just drain, remove old filter, install new filter, fill with atf. take less than one quart. done this on every diesel weve had. beed doing it on current psd for 170,000 miles. truck uses no oil and is still on original every thing. taught to do this by friend who was a certified cat diesel mechanic. just my .02
