Red face 97 7.3 overamping?

My 97 350 seemed to run out of fuel the other day. Tank selection didn't matter - would run 15-20 seconds then quit. I finnally noticed that when I charge the batteries, it'll run....

Noticed then that the alt (new in May) was so hot after 5 min of idling you couldn't touch it. Replaced it, and new one does the same thing. Actually slows the engine when the alt plugged in; something pulling that much load. Pulled all fuses and relays that kept engine running - no change.

Any ideas? GLow plugs maybe?

Unplug or disconnect the glow plug lead and try it again. It may take a process of elimination by removing and replacing the fuses. That is a heck of a load to heat an alternator though.
