Question Remove carbon build-up?

Hey all...

My 99 XLT 4.0 4x4 starting knocking like a broken screen door. I started running 93 octane and all was better..even got back up to 19-20 mpg's. For $100 the dealer can remove the carbon. My question is... will there be a marked improvement? Will the knocking eventually catch up with the 93 octane? I'm rather enjoying the improved gas mileage ,but I wouldn't mind seeing better response from the gas pedal.

(90K miles, btw)

Are you sure it is a carbon buildup problem? Did the problem just all the sudden start or gradually get worse with time? Are you getting a CEL? Most of the time a good road trip on the highway will get rid of carbon problems. What kind of driving do you do? Short trips in town or highway trips?

No need to fork over $100 for a decarbon procedure when you can do it yourself for the cost of a couple cans of cleaner, just like the dealer would do it:
