Speed Channel Muscle Car Shootout

Did anyone see the Shootout,,it was great, they had 7 Muscle cars from 69' and 70':
69' Boss 429 Mustang-375 hp
69' Hurst Oldsmobile 455 HO-380 hp
69 GTO Judge 400 Ram air- hp ?
69 AMX 390-315 hp
70 Chevelle 454 LS6-450 hp
70 Hemi Challenger-425 hp
70 Buick GS 455 stage 1-hp ?

Was put on by Dream Car Garage and Speed Channel Test's were:

0-60 mph
standing 1/4 mile
60-0 Braking
slalom handling contest
Burnout contest

7 muscle cars
5 tests
1 hour
1 winner

And the winner,,,,,,us FORD guys will be proud,, The Boss 429, did em all in ,, Pete said it performed flawlessly, and took whatever he gave it,,, yeeeaaaahhhh !

He liked the Chevelle but it was an auto, with high gears
The Hemi Challenger was having clutch troubles
Dont recall any problems with others.

It was a great show, to see and hear all the great Big Blocks wound up,,fuel and smoke,,,,,Now this is "Ford vs the Compitition",, for sure and Ford once again stepped up and showed em how to do it some 30 yrs ago,,

I am sure the GM crowd will chime in,,, but once again,,were in a FORD forum !!

Later,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mark

The old "stang" produced one hell of a burn out!! The results would have been the same if the Hemi would of had a "new" clutch!! FORDS RULE!!!

I really wished I wouldnt have missed that, but im very happy that the Chevelle didnt finish first. Kinda looks like the competition got "Bossed" around from what every one is saying Now im just waiting for a Chevy person to come in here and argue that it was biased and nothing in the list could beat the 450 hp Ls6 b/c it has 450 hp and the others didnt LOL. Kinda sounded like a lil kid there .

yea, i have always heard that 450 wasnt a realistic figure, and the 375 boss's were under rated at that. Did they actually dyno the cars? or just use the factory numbers?

What a great show, and a great ending!

The 'Boss 9' really stood out from the crowd. It by far, looked the greatest. But that is a matter of opinion. The fact was that it sounded like a race engine. It had the great response, went through the rpms with no delay, and got rubber in 3rd down the quarter! Ford originally had to detune the 429 for street use. The motor was very capable of 500-600hp in it's same form.

I'm going to post this on some other non-Ford sites, and see what I can stir up.

Unfortunatley, I know there going to dispute the fact that they didn't use the quickest muscle cars.

Here's a list compiled:

I don't see the Boss 302 or GT-500KR in there. It's funny that the 302 was recorded as being quicker then the 429.

BTW, anybody see the Carrol Shelby special just before 'Dream Car Garage'?

To the surprise of............no one.
If you didn't know the 429 was detuned und underrated, you've been hanging around the GM showroom too much.

BTW, fordifaction, the GT500 is no. 40 on the list, but it's a big, fat '69
too bad it wasn't an earlier '67

Wish I'd seen the show

Would be nice to toss a Thunderbolt in there for 1/4 mile times, since it did run around 11.75's i do believe. Seems to me that muscle cars still hold their own on the strip even compared to the Vipers and Vettes. I like to watch Cobra's and new Vipers run on the strip though, dont you know the guy in the Viper feels bad when a 60's car peels his doors. O btw whats the # 50 fastest car, I dont see it?

Yep, saw that. The KR had the 427so, also under rated @425hp. They do have the 427 Camaro of coarse.

I always heard the Boss 429 had serious traction problems on the street, any one know first hand?

What was not right in the test is they tested the Chevelle LS6 mated to a turbo 400 and 3.30 gears! Who in their right mind would use that setup to run against a Boss 9? I've gone to watch the Nostalgia Muscle Car class in Gainesville and a LS6 with 4.10 and a rock crusher dominates. I know I know it's not what you Boss 9 fans want to hear but it barely squeaked past the Chevelle and it had highway gears in it with an auto.

Yes, the Thunderbolts would go in the 11's. So would the Max Wedge and Super Stock Hemi Chryslers. The difference is these cars were limited production purpose built drag cars. They only made around 100 Thunderbolts, and a few hundred Max Wedge cars.

The true street muscle cars, like the LS6 Chevelle, GTO' and Hemi Challengers and Cudas were more common. They ran consistently in the 13's stock, with a few in the high 12's with some tuning and different tires.

Compare that to the SRT-10 Vipers that are capable of running mid 11's in stock form with the AC on and getting 20 MPG on the way to the track, and you can see that the 60's cars really won't be peeling any Vipers doors off. Even Z06 Vettes go super low 12's in stock form. There isn't a streetable mass production muscle car from the 60's-70's that will even come close stock. Not to mention that the brakes suck, and they can't turn worth a darn compared to Vettes and Vipers.

Don't get me wrong, I love Muscle cars as much as the next guy, I own a few myself, but the performance can't come close to matching the new cars out there today. I know my Z06 will put a hurtin on my 70 Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack, and the Challenger has gone 12.90's.

I am not sure what the 'Stang had in it for gears, since I did not see the show, but I have heard more excuses for those lard-arsed Chevelles than Carters has pills. Basically they were a big, fat car with a huge motor.

Yes, it was a big, fat car. Chevy called them "Heavy Chevy's", for crying out loud. The Mustang is quite svelte by comparison.
If I hear one more time how they(Chevelles) had the highest horsepower engine I think I will splash my shoes. The Ford SOHC blew them away horsepower wise, period.

What regular production, street legal car did Ford ever install the SOHC 427 in? The LS6 was the highest rated production motor of it's time. Yes, the SOHC 427, Super Stock Hemi's, and a few other made more power, but none of them were ever offered in a street car.

As far as weights go, a Boss 429 weighs around 3800 lbs (a friend has one), a 70 Chevelle weighs around 3950 lbs. 150 lbs isn't exactly a huge difference. and 3800 lbs for the mustang isn't very light either. That's about the same as what my Challenger weighs.
