Decoding an off brand axle

Hey guys need some help on decoding a Ch*vy rear axle. Might be out of a 80s Monte number on the housing is 2AH C162 1. Any help as to ratio would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck

If you recall the original post I was trying to get the ratio, not the number of bolts in the cover. But thanks anyway

You're not going to get a ratio off the housing. If it's still there, you need to get the numer off the tag on one of the diff bolts. Of course the easy way is to pull the cover off and look at the numbers on the side of the ring gear.

The other sure fire way is to turn the axle one whole turn and count how many times the drive shaft yoke turns. that should give you a accurate 2004 ratio. I've seen so many tags put back on the diff. after someone changed the inside gears. so going by the tag doesn't always work. (you can get more accuracy by going more than one axle rotation and dividing the resulting number of yoke turns by the number of axle rotations.)

As long as both axle shafts are turning, that works. If you are only turning one wheel, you need to divide by 2 because of the differential action.

Jet Jock,
From what I can find, it looks like it's out of an 82 or 83 passenger car with a 2.29 ratio, open differential (not posi). Decode as follows:

2AH -2.29 ratio, open differential
C -Chevy
162 -Julian date built
1 -shift

Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

Thanks Fatfords

That was the kind of info I knew one of you guys would have access to.
